You know what surprised me most about Heriot Properties Units 19 & 20? It’s how they’ve managed to create this incredibly intimate boutique experience right on Melrose Boulevard – and I mean that in the best way possible. When I first pulled up to number 3, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from what’s essentially a converted residential property, but stepping inside completely changed my perspective on what a four-star stay could feel like.

The thing is, this isn’t your typical Johannesburg hotel experience at all. Instead of fighting for elevator space with hundreds of other guests, you’re in one of just two beautifully appointed units that feel more like upscale serviced apartments than hotel rooms. I stayed in Unit 20, and the attention to detail was actually remarkable – we’re talking quality linens that don’t feel institutional, a kitchen that’s genuinely functional (not just decorative), and windows that actually open to let in fresh air. The owner clearly understands that business travelers and longer-stay guests want space to spread out and feel human, you know? My unit had this lovely separate living area where I could work without feeling like I was camping out on the bed, plus enough wardrobe space that I wasn’t living out of a suitcase.

What really sold me on the place, though, was the location itself. Melrose Boulevard puts you in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to Rosebank and Sandton for business meetings (about 10 minutes by car), but you’re tucked away from the tourist crowds and traffic chaos. There’s something refreshingly quiet about the street, especially in the evenings when you can actually hear birds instead of constant traffic. The nearby Melrose Arch is perfect for grabbing dinner or drinks without having to venture into the city center, and honestly, the whole area feels safer and more residential than a lot of Joburg accommodation options. Parking was never an issue either – they’ve got secure spots right on the property, which anyone who’s driven in Johannesburg will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The staff (and I use that term loosely since it’s such a small operation) were incredibly responsive via WhatsApp, which actually worked better than traditional front desk service for things like restaurant recommendations or arranging airport transfers. I’d definitely come back, especially for longer stays when you want that perfect balance of hotel service and apartment-style comfort.

  Comfortable, spacious apartment. Bed was nice, kitchen wel-equipped (just missing a pair of scissors, but that seems to be a constant in South African accommodation). Bathroom was clean and had a nice rain shower. Staff were friendly and communicative. Conveniently close to the shops and restaurants in Melrose Arch.
  
  What could be improved: Bed and kitchen in one space isn’t ideal, but was fine for one night. Melrose Arch is always a bit noisy and the windows aren’t double-glazed to keep the noise out. Cupboards were a bit hard to open: some of the springs in the push-to-open systems were broken.

  No fuss, easy self check-in. Clean and well equipped, more than we needed for an overnight. Private and quiet for such a busy area.
