Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Holiday Inn – Johannesburg Sunnyside Park by IHG, I wasn’t expecting much. Holiday Inn, you know? But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked away in Parktown, which is this lovely leafy area that feels worlds apart from the hustle of central Johannesburg, and honestly, the Princess of Wales Terrace location gives you this sense of old colonial elegance mixed with modern South African energy.

The thing that got me right away was how the staff genuinely seemed to care – not in that scripted way you get at some chains, but like they actually wanted you to have a good time. The lobby has this warm, welcoming vibe with local artwork that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. I mean, for a four-star place, it punches above its weight in terms of atmosphere. The rooms are what you’d expect from IHG – clean, comfortable beds that you actually want to sleep in, and the air conditioning works properly (which, trust me, matters during Joburg summers). The bathroom amenities are decent, though nothing fancy, but the water pressure is excellent and the towels are thick and fluffy.

What really makes this place special is the location – you’re close enough to hop over to Braamfontein or the city center when you want that urban buzz, but far enough away that you can actually sleep at night without sirens and traffic keeping you up. The area around the hotel is safe for walking during the day, which isn’t something you can say about everywhere in Johannesburg, and there are some genuinely good restaurants within a short drive. Parking is secure and covered, which locals will tell you is worth its weight in gold. I stayed here during a busy conference season and even then, the service never felt rushed or impersonal. The breakfast spread is solid – nothing groundbreaking, but they do a proper full English alongside some South African touches that show they understand their clientele. You know what really impressed me though? They remember your name and preferences after just a day or two, which makes the whole experience feel more personal than corporate.

  Hotel has emergency items incase you forgot to pack in. Even roll on
  Staff is very friendly and they accommodated me with my laundry and allowed us to watch the Bokke vs NZ rugby game.

  What could be improved: The corridors in the hotel carries the scent of the food from the kitchen including the dinning its self they need to work on the ventilation system of the kitchen
  The smell from the kitchen is too strong that it circulates you even when you leave the eating area
  I had to return to the room to freshen up again every time I would finish breakfast.
  And you need to do something to freshen up the corridors of the rooms from the smell coming from the kitchen
