Walking up to this place on 5th Street, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from the outside – it’s tucked into this quiet residential stretch in Johannesburg’s Houghton neighborhood that feels more like someone’s upscale suburb than a hotel district. But then you step through those doors and it’s like entering someone’s incredibly well-appointed family estate, if that family happened to have impeccable taste and a serious budget for interior design.

The whole manor concept isn’t just marketing speak here – they’ve actually pulled it off. Each room feels more like a suite in a private residence, with these gorgeous gardens visible from practically every window. I mean, the gardens are the real star of the show, honestly. There’s this amazing quiet that settles over the property in the evenings when you’re sitting outside, which is pretty remarkable considering you’re still very much in the heart of one of South Africa’s biggest cities. The staff seems to genuinely know the property inside and out too – not that rehearsed hotel training vibe, but more like they’re actually proud of where they work. During my stay, the front desk manager (I think his name was David) gave me these incredibly specific directions to a local coffee spot that ended up being exactly the kind of hidden gem you’d never find on your own.

What really sets this four-star property apart is how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between luxury and livability. The rooms are spacious without feeling cavernous, the bathrooms have those deep soaking tubs that you actually want to use, and – this might sound silly but it matters – the WiFi actually works reliably throughout the property, including out in the garden areas. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Johannesburg by car will appreciate. The breakfast situation deserves a mention as well – they do this continental spread that focuses heavily on local ingredients, and the coffee is legitimately excellent. I’d say the only minor downside is that because it’s such a peaceful, residential setting, you’ll want to have a plan for dinner since there aren’t tons of restaurants within easy walking distance. But honestly, that’s part of the charm – it feels like a proper retreat from the city buzz while still being close enough to everything that matters. The 9.4 rating this place has earned makes complete sense once you’ve spent a night or two here.

  The cottage was exceptional. Neal is a hospitable host. I was impressed with the property, looks like something out of a movie.
