I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Houghton Suites on Lloys Ellis Avenue, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream for attention, which is actually perfect for Houghton. You know how some hotels try way too hard? This isn’t one of them.

What really struck me was how quiet it gets here, especially considering you’re still technically in Johannesburg. Houghton’s always been one of those neighborhoods where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of just traffic, and the suites take full advantage of that. The rooms themselves are properly spacious – I mean, they’re actual suites, not just regular hotel rooms with a fancy name slapped on. There’s something refreshing about having enough space to spread out your stuff without playing Tetris with your luggage. The four-star rating feels right; it’s polished without being stuffy, comfortable without trying to impress you with gold-plated everything.

Here’s what I really appreciated though – the staff actually knows the area. When I asked about getting to Rosebank without dealing with the usual Johannesburg traffic nightmare, the front desk guy gave me this alternate route that saved me probably 20 minutes each way. Small thing, but it made a difference. The suites themselves have these big windows that let in plenty of natural light, which honestly can be rare in some Jo’burg hotels. Parking was straightforward too – none of that circling-the-block-three-times drama you sometimes get in the city. You know what else? The water pressure in the shower was actually decent, which might sound trivial until you’ve spent a week somewhere with a trickle masquerading as a shower head. The breakfast setup isn’t massive, but everything I tried was fresh, and they had proper coffee – not that instant stuff that makes you question your life choices.
