Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hyde Park Retreat on Christopherson Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place in Sandton. But you know what? Sometimes these smaller spots surprise you in the best way possible.

The thing about staying here is that you’re literally a stone’s throw from all the Sandton action without being stuck in the middle of the corporate chaos. I mean, you can walk to Sandton City Mall in about ten minutes if you’re feeling ambitious, but the street itself is actually pretty quiet – which honestly shocked me given how close you are to all those gleaming office towers. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful (not that rehearsed hotel smile thing), and they actually knew the neighborhood well enough to give me solid recommendations for dinner spots that weren’t tourist traps.

What really won me over was the attention to detail you don’t usually get at this price point. The rooms aren’t huge – let’s be real here – but they’re thoughtfully laid out, and someone clearly cared about making the space work. The bed was properly comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the Wi-Fi actually worked consistently, which is more than I can say for some fancier places I’ve stayed in Johannesburg. The breakfast setup is simple but fresh, and they make a decent coffee – crucial for early morning meetings in Sandton’s business district. Parking was straightforward too, which if you’ve ever tried to navigate Sandton during rush hour, you’ll appreciate that small mercy.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a flashy hotel with a rooftop pool or a fancy spa. It’s more like staying at a well-run guesthouse where everything just works. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet after business hours since it’s mainly commercial, so if you’re looking for nightlife within walking distance, you’ll want to hop in a cab. But for the price and location, especially if you’re in town for business or just need a solid base to explore the area, Hyde Park Retreat does exactly what it promises without any pretense.

  Beautiful place. Especially liked that a lot of the furniture was made of wood. The painting of the last supper gave me a sense of calm.
  Sat outside by the pool which was quiet and relaxing.

  The location is good and the facilty was redone.
  
  What could be improved: We stayed in Room 1 in a recently upgraded location. Whoever thought that a glass door to a bedroom is a good idea? While the glass panel was frosted about 90% of the space, there was enough space to look straight into the room with no limitations, meaning no privacy. Espacially with a large common area right opposite the bedroom. More importantly the hallway lights was a constant bother, shining in your eyes. This room is definitely not fit for purpose.
  Apart from the glass door to the bedroom there were several other issues:
  1. We could not get the aircon working.
  2. The bathroom had no window and the extractor fan was not working.
  3. The bedroom was on the ground floor with windows down to the floor but no burglar guards.
  4. A kettle was provided on a table, but no fridge or any facility to keep your own milk.
  5. No breakfast was available
  6. No dedicated parking space available

  Location well secured outside the busy street of Joburg and very quiet for someone who wants privacy and to disconnect with the high speed city life. Beautiful place.
  
  What could be improved: The place is still under development therefore somethings were accepted, like there was no bin in the room and there was no table those are minor.
