I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hydro Park Residences in Sandton WITH GENERATOR, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this three-star spot on Grayston Drive. The name’s a bit of a mouthful, and that “with generator” part had me wondering if I was in for some serious load shedding issues. But you know what? Sometimes the places that don’t try too hard to impress you end up being exactly what you need.

The location is actually pretty smart if you’re doing business in Sandton – you’re right in the thick of things without paying those ridiculous Sandton City hotel prices. I mean, you can literally walk to some of the major office buildings, and there’s a decent coffee shop about two blocks down that the locals seem to love (honestly, better than the hotel coffee). The residences themselves feel more like extended-stay apartments than a typical hotel, which worked perfectly for my week-long trip. My room had this little kitchenette that saved me from eating out every single meal – though I’ll warn you, the grocery run to Woolworths nearby becomes a bit of an adventure if you’re not used to South African supermarkets.

What really sold me on this place was how refreshingly straightforward everything was. The staff at reception didn’t oversell anything, just gave me the key and pointed me toward the elevator with a genuine smile. The generator thing? Well, it kicked in seamlessly during a power outage on my third night – didn’t even wake me up. And parking was never an issue, which if you’ve ever tried to find a spot in central Sandton during business hours, you know is basically a miracle. The rooms aren’t going to win any design awards, but they’re clean and spacious enough that I could spread out my work stuff without feeling cramped. The Wi-Fi actually worked consistently too, which honestly puts it ahead of some fancier places I’ve stayed. Sure, you can hear a bit of street noise if you’re a light sleeper, but it’s that urban hum that kind of grows on you after a day or two. I’d definitely stay here again – it’s one of those places that just gets the basics right without any unnecessary fuss.
