You know what struck me first about Indaba Hotel, Spa & Conference Center? The way it sits right there at the corner of William Nicol and Pieter Wenning – honestly, it’s one of those spots where you feel like you’re in the thick of Johannesburg’s business district but somehow removed from all the chaos. I mean, William Nicol can be an absolute nightmare during rush hour, but once you’re inside the property, there’s this surprising sense of calm that takes over.

The whole place has this sort of understated elegance going for it – not flashy like some of the newer hotels, but there’s something refreshingly authentic about it. The spa actually lives up to its billing, which is rare these days. I spent a good chunk of an afternoon there, and the therapists clearly know what they’re doing. The treatment rooms overlook these lovely gardens that make you forget you’re in the middle of one of Africa’s busiest cities. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to create genuine quiet spaces – even with all the conference activity happening (and there’s always something going on), you can find your corner of peace. The four-star rating feels about right; it’s not trying to be a luxury palace, but everything works well and feels thoughtfully put together.

I’ll be straight with you – the conference center aspect means there’s often a steady stream of business travelers, especially during the week. Some people might find that energy distracting, but I actually enjoyed the buzz. The restaurant benefits from it too; there’s usually interesting conversations happening at nearby tables, and the kitchen clearly has to stay on their toes with a demanding crowd. Parking is straightforward, which anyone who’s dealt with Johannesburg’s parking situation will appreciate. The rooms themselves are comfortable without being spectacular – good beds, reliable wifi, and those little touches that show someone’s paying attention to details. The location really grows on you once you realize how easy it is to get around from there, whether you’re heading to Sandton or need to navigate toward the airport. It’s one of those places that does the fundamentals really well, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

  Super comfortable bed and a warm room! Staff were friendly and helpful.

  What could be improved: I was told that there would be ashtrays outside as all rooms are non-smoking.
  I can accept that the rooms are non-smoking, but I didn't see one ashtray near our room nor at the venue for the event.
  I really don't like to leave cigarette buds on the ground. So we had to make sure we put the cigarettes out 100% before throwing them into the bin at the event.
  Outside our room was no bin or ashtray, so we had to use a cold drink tin to leave our cigarette buds in.
