Tucked into the ultra-modern Melrose Arch development, this five-star property sits right on The High Street, which sounds quaint but is actually this sleek pedestrian boulevard lined with cafes and boutiques that could easily be in Milan or Sydney.

The whole Melrose Arch area is honestly like Johannesburg’s answer to a European city center – you can walk everywhere safely, grab coffee at the Truth Coffee downstairs (seriously good flat whites), and there’s this energy that’s hard to find elsewhere in Joburg. The hotel itself has that polished Marriott consistency you’d expect, but the location makes it feel special. I mean, you’re technically in Rosebank, but it doesn’t feel like typical Johannesburg at all. The rooms on higher floors give you these sweeping views over the city, and on clear days you can actually see all the way to the Magaliesberg mountains – something the front desk mentioned that turned out to be completely true.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to get that most guests are either business travelers who need things to work seamlessly, or international visitors who want to explore safely. The concierge team actually knows their stuff about both the immediate area and the broader city – they steered me toward the Saturday market at Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein (short Uber ride) and gave solid advice about timing visits to places like Constitution Hill. The hotel’s restaurant scene is pretty solid too, though honestly, with all the dining options right outside your door in the Arch, you might find yourself eating out more than usual. Parking was straightforward – they have valet service, which matters more than you might think in this part of town. One small thing: the elevators can get a bit slow during peak check-in times, but that’s pretty minor when you’re dealing with a property this size. The fitness center stays open 24/7, which worked perfectly for my weird schedule, and the pool area has this nice urban resort vibe despite being in the middle of the city. If you’re looking for that classic African safari lodge experience, this obviously isn’t it – but if you want sophisticated comfort with easy access to Johannesburg’s more cosmopolitan side, it’s honestly hard to beat.
