I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Kaabo on Hilary Street, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name had me curious (it means “welcome” in Yoruba, which I learned later), and the address seemed tucked away in a part of Johannesburg I hadn’t explored much before. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not entirely sure where you’re headed.

This four-star spot turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you want to text your friends immediately. The building itself has this interesting mix of contemporary South African design with subtle African touches – not the over-the-top touristy stuff, but thoughtful details that actually mean something. The lobby smells faintly of rooibos and something I couldn’t quite place (maybe it’s the wood they used?), and there’s this natural light that streams in during the afternoon that just makes everything feel warm. Check-in was refreshingly quick – none of that standing around while they explain seventeen different amenities you’ll never use.

What really got me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the neighborhood. I mean, when I asked about getting dinner somewhere that wasn’t touristy, the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic list. He actually walked me to the window and pointed out this little place two blocks over where locals grab dinner, then mentioned which streets get a bit sketchy after dark (helpful, honestly). The rooms are well-designed without trying too hard – good lighting for actually reading, decent water pressure, and windows that open properly, which you’d be surprised how often hotels mess up. I stayed on the third floor and it was perfectly quiet, even though Hilary Street has some foot traffic during the day. Parking was straightforward too, which in Johannesburg is basically a minor miracle. The whole experience felt like staying somewhere that cares about the details without making a big show of it. It’s got that 9.1 rating for good reason – everything just works the way it should, and the location puts you right in a part of the city that feels authentically local rather than designed for tourists.

  The owner was very cordial and professional, the home was clean, comfortable and very well decorated – the owners even provided an extra bed for a last minute fifth member of our group for an additional fee which was well above and beyond what I could have hoped for. I greatly enjoyed my time there and will definitely be returning should I need to visit Joberg again.
  
  What could be improved: The Stove was a bit tricky to work with as the plates seem to be linked to the wrong dials, but it was an easily solvable problem once we realized the switchups.

  What could be improved: The front of the wall fence facing the Hilary Street is not electrified. However, the owner assured us of perfect security and that she had never recorded any security issues in the last 14 years. We became comfortable after being assured. The rear door locking system needs to be worked on as well as the locking system for the main bedroom door.
