I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Kiwara Guesthouse on Swazi Street, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Northcliff isn’t exactly the part of Johannesburg you hear tourists raving about, but that’s actually what makes this place so refreshing. You’re tucked away in this quiet residential area where you can hear birds chirping instead of constant traffic, which is pretty rare for Joburg.

The moment I walked through the front door, I knew this wasn’t your typical four-star guesthouse. The owner clearly has an eye for detail – there’s this lovely mix of African art and contemporary furnishings that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. My room had these gorgeous wooden floors that creaked just slightly when you walked across them (in a charming way, not annoying), and the bed was honestly one of the most comfortable I’ve slept in. The bathroom was spotless, which you know matters when you’re dealing with Johannesburg’s unpredictable water pressure – but here it was actually great.

What really won me over was the breakfast setup. They don’t do some massive buffet spread, but what they serve is fresh and really well done. I mean, the coffee alone made my mornings – proper South African roast that actually tastes like something. The staff remembered how I liked it after the second day, which is the kind of personal touch you just don’t get at bigger hotels. Speaking of staff, they’re incredibly helpful with directions and recommendations, but not in that pushy concierge way. When I mentioned wanting to explore the city center, they gave me honest advice about traffic times and even suggested which Uber routes to avoid during rush hour.

The location might seem out of the way if you’re planning to spend all your time in Sandton or the CBD, but honestly, it’s perfect if you want to experience Johannesburg like someone who actually lives here. There’s a lovely little coffee shop about a ten-minute walk down the street, and you’re close enough to the Northcliff Ridge to catch some pretty spectacular sunset views over the city. Plus, parking is never an issue here – try finding that in Melville or Parkhurst. The Wi-Fi is solid (crucial for staying connected), and the whole place has this peaceful vibe that makes you want to sit on the veranda with a book instead of rushing around being a typical tourist. It’s the kind of place where a 9.3 rating actually makes sense – not flashy or over-the-top, just really, really well done.

  The bed was super comfortable. They accommodated me with extra pillows. Manager is very nice and patient. Jacuzzi bath worked, the bathroom was cute. Hot water.
  
  What could be improved: Rooftop garden is under maintenance, lots of things up there and so doesn't look as good as it potentially could be. It's also not as big or open spaced/fancy as it looked.
