Kulanga Cottages Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Kulanga Cottages on 6th Street in Randburg, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The area’s got this sort of suburban residential feel that’s actually pretty refreshing if you’re tired of the usual city hotel scene. It’s one of those three-star places that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, which I actually appreciated more than I thought I would.

The cottages themselves have this cozy, almost homey vibe that works really well if you’re planning to stay in Johannesburg for more than just a night or two. I mean, you’ve got proper little kitchenettes in most units, which honestly saved me a fortune on takeout during my week there. The staff – and this might sound like a small thing, but it matters – actually remembered my name after the second day, which you don’t get at those massive chain places. The grounds are well-maintained without being overly manicured, if that makes sense. There are these nice outdoor seating areas where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of just traffic noise.

Now, Randburg isn’t exactly the tourist epicenter of Joburg, but that’s kind of the point. You’re close enough to get into the city center when you need to (about 20 minutes by car, depending on traffic), but you’re staying somewhere that feels more like a neighborhood than a tourist trap. There’s a decent shopping center just a few minutes away, and honestly, the local coffee shop around the corner makes a better cappuccino than half the fancy hotel lobbies I’ve been in. Parking is straightforward – no valet nonsense, just pull up and you’re sorted. The Wi-Fi actually works consistently, which I mention because I’ve learned not to take that for granted. You know what surprised me most? How quiet it gets at night. For a place that’s still technically in the greater Johannesburg area, you can actually sleep with the windows open without feeling like you’re camping next to a highway.

  • Kulanga experience – Ronell from South Africa – February 16, 2023 (8/10)

Lights during loadshedding. Comfortable bed. Aircon and heater.

What could be improved: Curtains and blinds were filthy. Also bathroom windowsill. Breakfast could have been better.

  • Good – Bartosz from Poland – October 1, 2022 (7/10)

The location, walking distance from shops and restaurants, and not too far when driving to other parts of town.
    The host was extremely helpful.
The breakfast is OK although the breakfast room is too tiny if all tables would be full.

What could be improved: Load shedding. The lodge wasn't very ready for this, and I sat by candlelight in the evening.
