You know what caught me off guard about La Couronne? Walking into what I honestly expected to be just another business hotel in Johannesburg, I found myself in this unexpectedly elegant space that feels more like a sophisticated boutique property than your typical four-star place. It’s tucked away on 5th Avenue in Melville, which – if you know the area – puts you right in the heart of one of Joburg’s most vibrant creative neighborhoods.

I mean, Melville has this wonderful bohemian energy that spills over into everything around it, and La Couronne somehow captures that without trying too hard. The rooms have this understated luxury thing going on – think clean lines and quality fabrics rather than flashy gold fixtures. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays despite being so close to all the action on 7th Street (you’re literally a two-minute walk from some of the best restaurants and bars in the city). The staff genuinely seems to know their neighborhood too, which makes a difference when you’re asking for recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist spots.

The breakfast situation is actually pretty solid – they do this continental spread that includes some local touches, and honestly, sitting in their dining area watching Melville wake up through the windows is a nice way to start your day. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this part of town, but they’ve got it sorted with secure spaces, which is no small thing in Johannesburg. I stayed during a busy weekend when the nearby Melville Koppies were packed with hikers, and the hotel never felt chaotic or overwhelmed. The 9.3 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s one of those places that just gets the details right without making a big fuss about it. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned to explore both the trendy Melville scene and hop over to other parts of the city when you want a change of pace.

  Very central location for shopping and hospital needs. The hosts are super friendly, live on-site and very helpful. Booking in and handing over the keys was very easy. The unit is comfortable, quiet and a lovely view. We didn't do any self catering as such as we were out a lot, but the amenities in the kitchen are very adequate.
  
  What could be improved: The couch in the lounge was not very comfortable, but it didn't affect us as we didn't need to watch TV.

  There is nothing I didn’t like. I loved everything about this place. From the host (what a lovely soul) to the facilities. I had the most peaceful stay. There are solar panels. So even when there was loadshedding, I didn't notice because there was always electricity. The place is beautiful. There is a balcony with AMAZING VIEWS. It felt like home away from home. I felt safe the entire stay.

  I stayed for a month here and I loved it so much I didn’t want to leave! Laura and Walter were so kind and so helpful, and made me feel very comfortable and welcome. The cottage has everything that is needed for both a short and a longer stay. The property has the most amazing view over the Melville Koppies reserve and it is so private, peaceful and quiet; and I never felt unsafe at all. Just around the corner you have Melville which has plenty of restaurants and cafes, and not too far down the road you have a supermarket, so it was very convenient. I couldn’t recommend it enough!
