I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Letaba Cottages on that quiet stretch of Letaba Road, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s tucked away in one of those residential pockets of Randburg where you might drive past it twice before spotting the entrance, but that’s actually part of its charm. This three-star setup feels more like staying at a well-kept family property than your typical hotel, which I mean in the best possible way.

The cottages themselves have this lived-in comfort that’s hard to fake – think proper wooden furniture that’s seen some years but has been lovingly maintained, kitchenettes that actually work (I tested the stovetop, obviously), and beds that don’t try too hard to be fancy but let you sleep properly. What really got me was the little details: decent coffee setup in each unit, windows that actually open for fresh air, and enough space to spread out your stuff without living out of a suitcase. The Wi-Fi holds up well enough for video calls, though I’d avoid peak evening hours if you’re uploading anything heavy. You know what surprised me most? How quiet it gets at night, despite being relatively close to the main Randburg thoroughfares – there’s something about the way the property’s positioned that shields it from most of the traffic noise.

Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned if you know Johannesburg at all. Randburg’s one of those areas that locals love because it’s got everything you need without the chaos of the city center – decent restaurants within walking distance, proper grocery stores, and you can actually find parking spots during the day. I found myself using it as a base to explore both the northern suburbs and making day trips into Joburg proper, since you’re not fighting your way out of heavy traffic every morning. The staff genuinely seem to know the area too, not just the tourist spots but where to find a good breakfast or which routes to avoid during rush hour. Honestly, for the price point and the fact that you get your own space with a kitchen, it’s one of those places that makes sense if you’re staying more than just a night or two, or if you’re the type who goes a bit stir-crazy in regular hotel rooms. It’s not going to win any design awards, but it does what it promises without any unpleasant surprises.
