College Road turned out to be one of those addresses that works really well if you know Johannesburg at all. What I appreciated most was the free private parking right on site — and trust me, if you’ve ever tried to park in Joburg, you know that’s worth its weight in gold. The area feels safe for walking during the day, which isn’t something you can say about every part of the city. Couples seem to really get this location (the ratings back that up), and I can see why — it strikes that perfect balance between accessible and intimate.

The Room Experience

My room had this lovely lived-in quality without feeling worn down, if that makes sense. The furnishings felt thoughtfully chosen rather than bulk-ordered from some hotel catalog. You know what really stood out? The attention to lighting — there were actually enough outlets near the bed, and the curtains blocked out the morning sun properly. Small things, but they matter when you’re trying to get a decent night’s sleep. The space felt generous without being cavernous, and honestly, the whole setup just worked for relaxing after long days exploring the city.

Breakfast & Practical Touches

Here’s something I wasn’t expecting but ended up loving — they do breakfast to go. Now, I know that might sound less appealing than a full dining restaurant setup, but hear me out. The quality was surprisingly good, and being able to grab something decent and head out early made such a difference to my schedule. Sometimes you want to catch the morning light at the Apartheid Museum or beat the crowds somewhere, and this flexibility actually enhanced the whole experience. It’s one of those practical touches that shows they understand how people actually travel.

• Pleasant Stay at Lieu de Grace – Desmond from South Africa – November 25, 2024 (8/10)

  On the 23/11/2024 we stayed over for a wedding which was about 300 to 400 meters down the road. We just needed to stay over for one night and this place was perfect for that. In total there was nine of us and our rooms were all next to each other. The rooms had all the usual basics, like towels, tea, coffee, milk and some rusks. The rooms were also equipped with fire extinguishers. Rooms also had a "gift" pack of miniature shampoo/conditioner, soap and insect repellant. Unfortunately Saturday was murderously hot especially out in that part of the world but our saving grace was that each room had a fan in it.
  Breakfast was what I think is called a "cold breakfast" very professionally packed in boxes – included was, a type of bread with cold meat and I think cheese, a small yogurt, a muffin, a banana, a small liqui-fruit – there may have been one or two other things but I've forgotten…
  Overall, our stay was welcoming, pleasant and relaxing. I would definitely recommend this place to others…

  however we had other family staying at other places in the area from the day before and they warned us to bring some spray repellant which we duly did. We had sprayed our rooms that afternoon just before leaving and upon returning – no mozzies….

  Beautiful room and friendly hostess and staff. We attended a wedding close by and it was the perfect accommodation for our family. The children loved playing in the yard. The extra detail to breakfast and other elements were highly appreciated.

  I appreciate the engagement once the booking was confirmed. Enabled me to make arrangements which otherwise would have been forgotten or left alone. Thank you! Since it was a special day for us, Vivien and the team went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one and very special. The room (Honeymoon suite) was spacious, clean and well positioned in the garden.
  
  What could be improved: On arrival I was not sure if I have arrived at the correct location and was not sure how/where to enter the premises. The Code/pin for the gate (I assume the pin on email confirmation was for the Gate) was not working.
  I think the Cold airline type breakfast is more practical for the host, but I would have preferred a warm breakfast instead.
