You know what? I stumbled across Liz at Lancaster Guesthouse almost by accident when I was looking for somewhere to stay in Randburg that wasn’t another cookie-cutter chain hotel, and honestly, it turned out to be one of those happy discoveries that makes you feel like you’ve got some secret local knowledge.

The place sits right on Lancaster Avenue – which, if you know this part of Johannesburg, puts you in a really sweet spot where you’re close enough to the action but not dealing with the chaos of the city center. It’s this four-star guesthouse that actually feels like someone’s well-appointed home rather than a sterile hotel room, and I mean that in the best possible way. The owner clearly has an eye for detail – there are these little touches everywhere that you don’t expect, like proper reading lights by the bed (thank god, because so many places get this wrong) and bathroom amenities that don’t feel like they came from a bulk supplier. The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in elegance that makes you want to kick off your shoes and actually relax.

What really sold me on the place, though, was how quiet it gets at night. I mean, you’re still in Joburg, so there’s the occasional car, but the guesthouse is tucked back just enough from the main road that you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise. The breakfast situation is pretty fantastic too – they do this proper South African spread, but it’s not overwhelming, and the coffee is actually good, which honestly can be hit or miss at smaller places like this. Parking was straightforward, which if you’ve ever tried to navigate some of the B&Bs in this area, you’ll appreciate. The staff genuinely seem to care about whether you’re having a decent stay, and they know the area well enough to point you toward the good restaurants nearby (there’s this little place about ten minutes away that does incredible bobotie – just ask them about it). I’d definitely go back, and that 9.3 rating it’s got makes complete sense once you’ve spent a night or two there. It’s one of those places where everything just works the way it should, without any fuss or pretension.
