I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Lucid Apartments on Surrey Avenue, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this three-star setup in Randburg. The building has this modern, minimalist vibe that actually works pretty well against the suburban backdrop, though it’s definitely more functional than flashy. What struck me right away was how quiet this stretch of Surrey Avenue is compared to the main drags in Johannesburg – you’re close enough to everything but tucked away from the constant hum of traffic that can drive you crazy in other parts of the city.

The apartments themselves are surprisingly spacious, which honestly makes sense given that you’re not paying premium rates for Sandton or Rosebank real estate. I mean, the furnishings won’t win any design awards, but everything’s clean and actually comfortable – the kind of place where you can spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. The kitchenette setup is pretty decent too, which came in handy since I’m not always in the mood for restaurant meals every single night. What I really appreciated was the reliable WiFi (crucial for getting any work done) and the fact that the air conditioning actually works properly – you’d be surprised how many places skimp on that. The parking situation is straightforward, which anyone who’s dealt with Johannesburg’s parking nightmares will tell you is worth its weight in gold.

You know what really sold me on this place though? The location is genuinely useful without being touristy. You’re about fifteen minutes from Sandton City if you need that mall fix, but you’re also close to some decent local spots that most visitors never stumble across. There’s this great Portuguese bakery just down the road that does incredible pastéis de nata, and the Uber drivers actually know how to find the place without twenty phone calls back and forth. The 7.4 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. I’d definitely consider staying here again, especially if I wanted a bit more space and a quieter base while still being connected to everything that matters in Jo’burg.

  I got my refund back on the apartment after making millions of calls to booking.com and sending messages. The host was finally able to give back my refund after a day had gone by.
  
  What could be improved: I didnt like the fact that the host was nowhere to be seen and there was no one to assist. With check in. We stood at the gate for about two hours hoping to get a response until we gave up. After a long drive and fatigue we had to make another booking somewhere else.

  Location close to amenities, close to Randburg Square and Ferndale on Republic, shopping malls. Staff very friendly and helpful. Free wifi and Netflix!
