I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Luxury Apartment in Sandown on Patricia Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name had me thinking it might be one of those overly fancy places that’s all flash and no substance, but this four-star property actually surprised me in the best way possible.

What struck me first was how quiet Patricia Road is compared to the usual Sandton chaos. You’re literally minutes from the madness of Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, but tucked away on this residential street that feels worlds apart from all that traffic and construction noise. The apartment itself has this lived-in elegance – I mean, it’s clearly well-maintained and stylish, but it doesn’t feel like a museum where you’re afraid to touch anything. The kitchen actually works (you know how some places give you a gorgeous kitchen that’s basically just for show?), and I found myself making proper meals instead of just ordering takeout every night. The living spaces are generous without being cavernous, and honestly, the natural light throughout the day is something special – those big windows really make a difference.

The area itself is what really sold me on the place. You’ve got the Gautrain station practically on your doorstep, which is a godsend if you need to get to the airport or into the city center without dealing with Johannesburg traffic. But what I really appreciated were the little things – there’s a decent grocery store within walking distance, proper restaurants that aren’t just mall food courts, and you can actually take evening walks around the neighborhood without constantly looking over your shoulder. The building’s security is solid without being oppressive, and parking is straightforward (which anyone who’s tried to park in central Johannesburg will appreciate). I stayed during a particularly busy conference season, and while the main Sandton hotels were packed and overpriced, this place felt like a genuine find. Sure, it’s not going to have a concierge or room service, but sometimes you just want a comfortable base where you can spread out, do some work, and feel like you’re actually staying somewhere real rather than just passing through another sterile hotel room.
