You know what really struck me about Margaret’s Place? It’s one of those spots that feels more like staying at your well-traveled aunt’s house than a typical hotel – and I mean that in the best possible way. Tucked away on Nottingham Road in Kensington, this three-star gem sits in what’s honestly one of Johannesburg’s more understated neighborhoods, where you get that authentic residential vibe without being miles from everything interesting.

The owner – and yes, I’m pretty sure Margaret is a real person who actually cares about this place – has clearly put thought into the little details that most chain places completely miss. The rooms have this lived-in comfort with proper reading lights (thank goodness), and the beds are surprisingly good quality for what you’re paying. I mean, you’re not getting marble bathrooms or anything fancy, but everything works well and feels clean without that sterile hotel smell. What really got me was the breakfast setup – it’s served in this sunny little dining area where you can actually have a conversation with other guests without feeling awkward. The coffee’s decent too, which honestly makes or breaks my morning.

Location-wise, you’re in a sweet spot here. Kensington isn’t flashy, but it’s got character – tree-lined streets, local cafes where people actually live and work rather than just passing through. You can walk to some great little restaurants within about ten minutes, and getting into the city center or out to the suburbs is pretty straightforward. Parking‘s not a nightmare either, which anyone who’s driven in Joburg will appreciate. The staff genuinely seems to know the area well – they pointed me toward this fantastic Ethiopian place just down the road that I never would have found otherwise. Sure, it’s not going to blow you away with luxury amenities, but sometimes you just want a place that feels real, where you can spread out your stuff and plan your next day without feeling like you’re camping in someone else’s idea of sophistication. The 8.3 rating makes total sense to me – it’s doing exactly what it promises, just doing it really well.

  The place itself was very clean, neat and cozy. We staff is very friendly and helpfull. The grounds is very well kept, neat and clean.
  
  What could be improved: We where suprised by the location. On our way to Margarets Place, we drive through a "not so save" neigberhood. We where really concern the futher we drived – but it ended up to be okay.

  Friendly staff. Veldeen welcomed me, 😌, Felt like home. The whole place has a very calming atmosphere with a great garden and pool.
  Despite municipal water shutdown, we were well provided for by the staff on a daily basis. Will definitely stay here again if ever in the area.

  The room was lovely and the pool was clean. We had WiFi and the staff was attentive to us.
  
  What could be improved: They should upgrade their TV do that we able to log in with sites where we can watch movies.
  Check for hot water before allocating a room as we didn't have hot water in the evening and in the morning.
