I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Maria’s in Melville on 8th Avenue, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Melville has this reputation for being artsy and a bit rough around the edges, but this place completely surprised me in the best way. The moment you step inside, you realize you’ve found something genuinely special – a four-star boutique spot that actually lives up to its stellar 9.6 rating.

The thing about staying in Melville is that you’re right in the thick of Joburg’s creative heart, and Maria’s gets that completely. The staff here – and I mean this – actually know the neighborhood. They’ll tell you which coffee shops are worth the walk (there’s this amazing little place just two blocks down that does proper flat whites), when the weekend market gets too crowded, and honestly, which streets to avoid after dark. The rooms themselves have this comfortable, lived-in elegance that doesn’t feel stuffy or overly precious. You know what I mean? Like someone’s stylish aunt decorated them with actual care rather than just ordering everything from a hotel supply catalog.

What really won me over was the attention to small details that you only notice when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The water pressure is fantastic – sounds silly, but after a long day exploring the city, a proper shower matters. The walls are thick enough that you’re not hearing every conversation in the hallway, which is more than I can say for some supposedly fancier places I’ve stayed. And the breakfast situation (though they don’t make a huge fuss about it) is genuinely good – fresh ingredients, local touches, served until a reasonable hour so you don’t have to set an alarm on vacation. The location puts you within walking distance of Melville’s main strip with all its restaurants and galleries, but far enough from the late-night noise that you can actually sleep. Parking is sorted, which anyone who’s driven in Joburg will tell you is not something to take for granted. I ended up extending my stay by two nights because, well, why mess with a good thing?

  The apartment had everything you'd need and more. Beautiful garden views, fully fitted balconies and a host of amenities you would need and want for your stay. The size of the apartment was perfect for the two of us and is conveniently located in the heart of Melville. The owners are serious about security so you'd always feel safe.
