I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Marion Lodge on Marion Street in Johannesburg, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The address puts you right in the heart of Sandton, and you know how that area can be hit or miss with accommodations. But this four-star spot actually surprised me in the best way possible.

The thing that struck me immediately was how they’ve managed to create this sort of intimate, residential feel despite being smack in the middle of one of South Africa’s busiest business districts. I mean, you’re literally minutes from the Sandton City shopping center and all those gleaming office towers, but once you’re inside Marion Lodge, it feels more like staying at a well-appointed friend’s place than some sterile corporate hotel. The staff genuinely seemed to remember my name after the first day – and I’m not talking about just glancing at a computer screen, but actual recognition. That 8.4 rating makes total sense once you experience how they handle the little details.

What really won me over was the practical stuff that most places overlook. Parking is secure and actually spacious (if you’ve driven in Sandton, you’ll appreciate this), the Wi-Fi works consistently throughout the building, and the rooms have proper blackout curtains – crucial when you’re dealing with those bright Johannesburg mornings after a long flight. The breakfast setup isn’t elaborate, but it’s done thoughtfully with local touches that feel authentic rather than touristy. I particularly loved that they source some items from nearby suppliers, so you’re getting a genuine taste of the area without the markup you’d find at the bigger chain hotels. The location puts you within walking distance of some excellent local restaurants too, which honestly saves you from having to navigate Sandton’s sometimes tricky traffic patterns every time you want a decent meal. You know what really sealed the deal for me though? On my third morning, the front desk actually remembered I preferred my coffee early and had it ready before I even asked. It’s those kinds of touches that turn a good stay into one you’ll actually remember fondly.

  We stayed in the family room. It was clean, warm, and comfy. It's just a small issue with the shower drain not draining as quickly as it should, which leads to the water pooling in it. And there was no bath mat. We had to use towels when stepping out of the shower. They organized transportation for us to attend a concert, and breakfast was a good spread. The place is very well maintained, and I'm definitely going back.

  As always, the staff are genuinely friendly. They make you feel welcome, and if you up for a quick chat, you walk away smiling or laughing.
  
  What could be improved: Not sure if it's only some rooms, but when the shower is used in another room, the sound from the pipes echoed into my room. I did mention it to the host when he asked if everything is to my satisfaction. But other than this, Marion Lodge is an amazing facility, and I come back each time 😊

  Really comfy stay, the room was super clean and cozy. Everything felt well taken care of. The breakfast was delicious. Perfect place to relax. Would definitely stay again!
  
  What could be improved: If you don’t have a rented car, you’ll need to take an Uber for almost everything. Luckily, the rides are pretty cheap.
