You know what, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Maryhurst on Johannesburg Road – honestly, the name made me think it might be some stuffy old-school place. But this three-star spot actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s got this understated charm that you don’t always find in Johannesburg, especially in this part of town where everything seems to be either ultra-modern glass towers or slightly tired business hotels.

The thing about Maryhurst is that it feels like someone actually thought about what travelers need, rather than just checking boxes. The rooms aren’t huge – I mean, this isn’t a luxury resort – but they’re laid out smart, with proper bedside lighting (thank god) and outlets where you actually need them. The beds are surprisingly comfortable too, which matters when you’re dealing with jet lag or long days exploring the city. I stayed on the third floor and it was pleasantly quiet, even though Johannesburg Road can get pretty busy during rush hour. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work – not in that over-the-top way that feels fake, but more like they’re just decent people doing their jobs well.

What really won me over was the breakfast situation. They’ve got this little dining area that gets great morning light, and while it’s not fancy, the food is actually good – proper bacon, fresh fruit that’s actually ripe, and coffee that doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around since yesterday. Plus, being on Johannesburg Road puts you in a really practical spot. You’re close enough to the business district that Uber rides don’t cost a fortune, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with constant city center chaos. There’s a decent grocery store just a few minutes’ walk away, which is clutch if you need to grab snacks or basics. Parking was straightforward too – they’ve got a small lot that feels secure, and honestly, in Joburg that peace of mind is worth a lot. I’d definitely come back here, especially for the price point. It’s one of those places that just works without any drama.

  Area is quite and clean. Owners are friendly. Room is big with Google TV, nice wardrobes, microwave, refrigerator, shower with hot water. Own remote to open and close @ own time. Swimming pool.

  What could be improved: Just that the unpreparedness of the host on the first day. Its a self catering my expectation was to find the kitchen utensils ready but that wasn't the case. Just have the items there ready for use.
