I mean, when you’re staying on West Road South, you’re right in the thick of Sandton’s business district, but honestly – and this surprised me – it doesn’t feel touristy at all. The 9th floor gives you this amazing perspective over the city that most visitors never get to see.

The apartment itself is what I’d call genuinely luxurious without being stuffy about it. The kitchen is fully kitted out (I’m talking proper appliances, not those tiny hotel fridges), which was perfect because I actually ended up cooking a few meals instead of eating out every night in Johannesburg. The living space flows really naturally, and there’s this floor-to-ceiling window situation that floods everything with light during the day. What I loved most, though, was how quiet it gets in the evenings – you’re close enough to Nelson Mandela Square that you can walk there in about ten minutes, but far enough that you don’t hear the weekend crowds. The building itself feels secure without being overly formal, and the other residents I bumped into in the elevator were friendly enough to give me restaurant recommendations.

Here’s the thing about this four-star place – it’s got that 9.5 rating for good reason, but it’s not because they’re trying to impress you with fancy lobby displays or whatever. It’s because everything just works the way it should. The Wi-Fi is actually fast (I was working remotely for part of my stay), the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a helicopter, and honestly, the bed was one of those setups where you sleep better than you do at home. The bathroom has this rainfall shower head that I’m still thinking about weeks later. Small thing, but when you’ve been walking around Sandton City all day, it matters. The only minor thing I’d mention is that parking can get a bit tight during business hours since you’re sharing the building with residents, but the security guards are helpful about finding spots. If you’re looking for that authentic Johannesburg experience where you feel like you’re actually living in the city rather than just visiting it, this is exactly what you want.
