You know what surprised me about Matina Guest House? Walking up to this place on Dion Close, I honestly wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet residential pocket of Sandton, and from the street it just looks like another house in the neighborhood. But step inside and you immediately get why this four-star spot has such a solid reputation.

The owner, Matina herself, actually greets most guests personally, which is something you don’t see much anymore. She’s got this way of making you feel like you’re staying at a friend’s place rather than some impersonal hotel. The rooms are spread across what feels like a converted family home – mine had these gorgeous wooden floors that creak just slightly when you walk across them, and honestly, I found it charming rather than annoying. The breakfast room overlooks this lush garden where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic noise, which is pretty remarkable considering you’re still in Johannesburg. I spent way too many mornings just lingering over coffee out there, watching the jacaranda trees (when they’re in bloom, it’s absolutely stunning).

What really won me over was the attention to small details that matter when you’re traveling. There’s always someone around to help with directions or restaurant recommendations, and they actually know what they’re talking about – not just reading from some generic list. The WiFi is rock solid throughout the property, which I learned the hard way matters a lot when you’re trying to work remotely. Parking is secure and right on the property, which anyone who’s spent time in Sandton will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The location is actually perfect if you want to be close to Sandton City and all the business district stuff but still sleep somewhere peaceful. I could walk to several decent restaurants, and getting an Uber to anywhere in the area was always quick and easy. One small thing – the hot water takes a minute to get going in the mornings, but once it does, the shower pressure is excellent. I’ve definitely stayed at pricier places with worse bathrooms. The whole experience just feels more authentic than those big chain hotels where every room looks identical and the staff follows scripts. It’s the kind of place where you might end up chatting with other guests over breakfast, and where Matina remembers how you like your coffee by day three.
