I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Melrose Arch Luxury Apartment – WITH GENERATOR on Atholl Oaklands Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name says “luxury apartment” but it’s actually more like a well-appointed serviced apartment in one of Johannesburg’s more polished neighborhoods. And that generator part? Well, you know what, in South Africa that’s actually a selling point these days with the whole load shedding situation.

The location is pretty sweet if you’re familiar with this part of Joburg. You’re right in the thick of Melrose Arch, which honestly feels like this little bubble of upscale shopping and dining that’s completely different from the grittier parts of the city. I mean, you can walk to some decent restaurants without worrying about safety, which isn’t something you can say about every area here. The apartment itself sits in a complex that feels more residential than hotel-like – I actually had to double-check the address because it’s not obviously marked as accommodation from the street. The three-star rating seems about right; it’s clean and functional but don’t expect marble lobbies or concierge service.

What I really appreciated was the space – these aren’t cramped hotel rooms but actual apartments with proper kitchens and living areas. The generator (hence the name, I guess) kicked in seamlessly during a power outage on my second night, which was honestly impressive. Most places just leave you sitting in the dark with a shrug. The furnishing is that safe, modern style you see everywhere – nothing offensive but nothing particularly memorable either. Parking was straightforward, though the complex can get a bit confusing to navigate at first with all the similar-looking buildings. The area gets busy during lunch hours with the office crowd from nearby, but evenings are pretty quiet. If you’re looking for that authentic Johannesburg experience, this might feel a bit sanitized, but sometimes you just want a reliable place to crash with decent wifi and a kitchen where you can actually cook something decent. The 8-rating from other guests makes sense – it does what it promises without any major surprises, good or bad.

  Brilliant location in safe walking distance of everything we needed, including great coffee bars and excellent restaurants, and close to big-brand hotels so that it is easy for Uber drivers to find. The apartment is spacious and comfortable, although the TVs in the bedrooms didn't work. The security in the complex/area is excellent, which is paramount in Johannesburg.
  
  What could be improved: There is only one key and one access tag for four people, each with different itineraries. The last person out of the apartment takes the key and that's it for the day – too bad if someone else wants to come home early. The only solution is to leave the key with security office, which is not on the premises. This requires running up and down and over the road, so for us it was not an option. Also, the buzzer in the apartment to let people in from downstairs has been disabled; & there is no access to the building without the tag, so the person upstairs with the key & tag has to come down to let the others into the building, no matter how late at night or early in the morning. In short, this arrangement is great for people coming and going at the same time, but a nightmare for anyone else.
  
  I would have liked an ironing board in better condition, but it's not a deal breaker.
