But this four-star spot actually surprised me in the best way possible. The entrance from Irene is a bit tucked away (which is actually great because it keeps things quieter), and once you’re inside, you realize you’ve stumbled onto something that feels more like a well-kept secret than a typical hotel.

What I love about this place is how it sits right in that sweet spot of Johannesburg where you’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the chaos to actually get some sleep. Melrose North has this sort of residential vibe that grows on you – you know what I mean? You’ve got the Wanderers Stadium practically around the corner, and honestly, during cricket season, there’s this buzz in the air that’s pretty infectious. The apartments themselves are spacious in a way that makes you wonder why more places don’t do self-catering properly. I mean, having a proper kitchen when you’re traveling for more than a few days is a game-changer, especially when you get tired of restaurant food (and let’s face it, that happens faster than we’d like to admit).

The staff here actually knows the neighborhood – like, really knows it. They’ll tell you which Woolies is closest for groceries, or that the little café two streets over does the best flat whites in the area. That kind of local intel is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to live like a person instead of just being a tourist. Parking is secure and covered, which anyone who’s spent time in Joburg will tell you is not something to take lightly. The rooms are clean and modern without being sterile – they’ve got that lived-in comfort that makes you want to kick off your shoes and stay awhile. Sure, the décor isn’t going to win any design awards, but it’s functional and pleasant, and honestly, that matters more than Instagram-worthy wallpaper when you’re actually living in the space. The Wi-Fi is solid (tested it extensively while working from the apartment), and the air conditioning works properly, which during those sweltering Highveld summers is basically non-negotiable.

  The apartments were exceptionally comfortable, with everything I needed for a great stay. The hosts were incredibly helpful, and Jennifer’s service was outstanding. The property offers plenty of facilities, which makes it especially convenient for long-term stays. I also appreciated that the rooms were refreshed regularly, and having access to the gym was an excellent bonus.
  
  What could be improved: What I think could be improved are the couches, they weren’t very comfortable, especially when sitting together as a family, as they felt a bit hard and small. I also think having a full-length mirror would be a great addition for checking outfits. Those were the main areas I felt could be improved, otherwise everything else was excellent.
