That’s actually part of its charm. This four-star spot sits right in the heart of Melville, and once you spend a day here, you realize you’re perfectly positioned for everything this artsy suburb has to offer.

The thing about staying here is that you’re genuinely in a residential area – I mean, you’ll hear kids playing outside and neighbors chatting over fences, which honestly made me feel more like I was living in Joburg rather than just visiting. The guesthouse itself has this relaxed, homey vibe that somehow manages to feel polished without being stuffy. My room had these lovely wooden touches and really thoughtful details (the kind of stuff that makes you think someone actually cares about this place). The beds are properly comfortable too – none of that rock-hard nonsense you sometimes get at smaller places.

What really sold me on this spot was how the owners clearly know their neighborhood. They’ll point you toward the best coffee shops within walking distance, and trust me, Melville has some gems tucked away on side streets you’d never find on your own. The whole 7th Street strip is literally a few minutes’ walk away, where you’ll find everything from vintage shopping to proper local restaurants. Parking was never an issue – there’s secure space on the property, which is honestly a relief in this part of town. The only minor thing I’d mention is that weekend nights can get a bit lively since you’re so close to the action, but I actually liked falling asleep to the distant hum of Melville’s nightlife. It felt authentic, you know? Plus, if you’re the type who wants to explore Johannesburg’s creative side without staying in some generic hotel in Sandton, this is your spot. The staff genuinely seemed to enjoy chatting about local happenings, and that 9-out-of-10 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve experienced how smoothly everything runs here.

  Malibongwe and the rest of the staff were kind and very helpful, and the breakfast was delicious. Melville Gap is a cosy and stylish BnB with great coffee and everything else you need.
