I honestly expected just another generic guesthouse when I first pulled up to Orange Street, but this place actually has some real character tucked away in one of Johannesburg’s more interesting neighborhoods. Auckland Park isn’t exactly where most tourists end up – it’s got this lived-in, residential vibe that feels refreshingly authentic after dealing with the usual hotel districts.

The three-star rating is pretty spot-on, I mean, you’re not getting luxury here but everything works and the space has this sort of homey feel that bigger hotels just can’t pull off. What really surprised me was how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re right in the middle of a proper neighborhood with actual families and local businesses. The room I stayed in had these old wooden floors that creaked just enough to remind you that you’re in a real building with some history, not some cookie-cutter chain property. Honestly, the WiFi was solid (which isn’t always a given in this part of town), and I loved that I could walk to proper local spots for coffee instead of being stuck with whatever overpriced café situation most hotels push on you.

Here’s the thing about staying in Auckland Park – you’re actually getting a taste of how regular Joburg people live, which is pretty rare when you’re just passing through. There’s a decent local market within walking distance, and you can catch a taxi or Uber pretty easily when you want to head into the city center or over to Melville proper for dinner. The neighborhood feels safe during the day, though like anywhere in Joburg, you want to be smart about wandering around after dark. The staff seemed to really know their stuff about getting around the area, which honestly saved me some headaches with directions. It’s not going to blow your mind, but for the price point and the genuine local experience, Melville Mews-2 delivers something that feels real rather than manufactured for tourists – and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

  We liked that it was well equipped with all the necessities. It was clean and the furnishing was cute and modern.
  
  What could be improved: The WiF connection i was weak. The Netflix was not working. A suggestion would be to have 2 heaters, one upstairs and one downstairs as taking it up and down was an inconvenience.

  The apartment exceeded my expectations. It was beautiful. It was clean and everything you could need on your stay was available. Iron, loadshedding light, cutlery, glasses, mop, everything. Exceptional!
  
  What could be improved: They could invest on a great WiFi, it works, but it's not too strong. It didn't bother me that much because I wasn't always on the apartment. The bedroom light wasn't working, so I'd appreciate if it could be fixed.
  
  When taking a cab, the GPS may say the destination is on the left/right side. Do look on the OPPOSING side and check for the writing Mellvile Mews. We nearly got lost because of the GPS.
  
  Some of the closet/wardrobe doors were locked with a padlock. Scary for a bedroom with no light! Or maybe I watch too much horror movies.

  The property looks exactly like the pictures. It was clean, modern and in a lovely area. I loved the kitchen. The host was very responsive to texts and any questions I had.
  
  What could be improved: The bed needs to be replaced, it's a bit uncomfortable. The sheets had some stains on it. And there was no space to hang our face cloths in the bathroom, the drying rack outside was dirty and unsanitary for face cloths.

  I liked the set up of the apartment, it was cozy and perfect for a single person or couple.
  
  What could be improved: There were some basic elements I had issues with. Such as that there was salt but no pepper. The sponge to wash dishes was old. And there was no hand soap in the bathroom. The wifi was also very patchy, as I was there for university I needed a good connection to study.
