The thing about Bedfordview is that it’s one of those Johannesburg suburbs that locals know well but tourists often overlook – it’s got this quiet residential feel but you’re still close enough to the city center that you don’t feel cut off from everything. The Mercure sits right in this sweet spot where you can walk to decent restaurants and there’s a shopping center nearby (I mean, nothing fancy, but useful stuff), yet you’re not dealing with the chaos of downtown Joburg. Parking was surprisingly easy – they’ve got their own lot, which honestly is worth mentioning because finding safe parking in this part of the world can be… well, let’s just say it matters more than you might think.

The rooms are what I’d call solidly comfortable – not going to win any design awards, but everything works and the beds are actually pretty decent. I stayed on the third floor and it was quiet enough, though you’ll hear some traffic from Bradford Road if you’re a light sleeper. The staff really made the difference though – there’s this genuine friendliness that you don’t always get at chain hotels. Check-in was smooth, and when I needed recommendations for dinner (because hotel food gets old fast), the front desk guy knew exactly which places in the area were worth walking to and which ones to skip. That kind of local knowledge is gold when you’re somewhere new. The breakfast isn’t going to blow your mind, but it’s solid – proper coffee, decent selection, and they actually had fresh fruit that looked like someone cared about it. I’ve stayed at pricier places in Johannesburg where the breakfast was honestly worse. The whole place has this unpretentious vibe that I found refreshing – it knows what it is and does it well rather than trying to be something fancy and falling short.

Johannesburg travel planning should be done early, especially during peak season when the city hosts internationally celebrated events and festivals in Newtown and other iconic cultural districts.
