You know what caught me off guard about the Michelangelo Hotel Luxury 1 Bedroom Apartment- Nelson Mandela Square & Sandton City? It’s actually way more spacious than you’d expect from most hotel rooms in Johannesburg. I mean, when you’re staying right on Maude Street in the heart of Sandton, you usually sacrifice space for location – but this place gives you both. The apartment setup is honestly perfect if you’re doing an extended stay or just hate living out of a suitcase like I do. There’s a proper kitchen where you can actually cook (not just reheat leftovers), and the living area has this view that makes you forget you’re in the middle of one of Africa’s busiest financial districts.

What really sold me on this five-star spot was how walkable everything is from here. Nelson Mandela Square is literally right there – and I’m talking about the one with that massive Mandela statue that everyone takes photos with. You can grab coffee at the square in the morning, pop into Sandton City for shopping (or escaping Joburg’s afternoon thunderstorms), and still be back in your apartment within minutes. The building itself sits in this sweet spot where you get all the energy of Sandton’s business district during the day, but it actually quiets down nicely in the evenings. I was worried about traffic noise from Maude Street, but honestly, the soundproofing is solid.

The apartment styling leans modern without being cold – think clean lines but with enough personality that you don’t feel like you’re staying in a showroom. What I really appreciated were the little details that show someone actually thought about how people live: plenty of outlets near the bed, good water pressure in the shower, and – this might sound silly – but decent lighting for working on your laptop. The WiFi actually works consistently too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to get stuff done. I’ll be straight with you though, the air conditioning can be a bit aggressive when you first turn it on, so maybe dial it back a notch. Location-wise, you’re about a five-minute walk from the Gautrain station if you’re heading to the airport, and there’s decent parking in the building if you’re brave enough to drive in Sandton traffic. For what you get – the space, the location, that five-star service level – it’s honestly one of the better value plays in this part of the city.
