Mint Hotel Rosebank Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Mint Hotel Rosebank on Jellicoe Avenue, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The building sits in this sort of transitional area where residential meets commercial, and you know what? That actually works in its favor. You’re not dealing with the chaos of the CBD, but you’re still close enough to everything that matters in Johannesburg.
The thing about this three-star place is that it doesn’t try to be something it’s not, which I actually found refreshing. The lobby’s got this clean, modern vibe – lots of whites and mint greens (obviously) – and the staff genuinely seemed happy to see me when I checked in around 2 PM on a Tuesday. The rooms are what you’d call efficiently designed rather than spacious, but honestly, the bed was comfortable and everything worked properly, which is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed. The bathroom’s compact but well-thought-out, and they’ve got decent water pressure, which anyone who’s traveled around South Africa knows isn’t always a given.
What really sold me on the place though was the location – you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Gautrain station, which means you can actually get to OR Tambo without dealing with Johannesburg traffic (and if you’ve driven here, you know that’s worth its weight in gold). The Zone shopping center is right there too, so grabbing groceries or finding a decent meal isn’t an adventure. I spent one evening just wandering around the Rosebank area, and it’s got this nice mix of local spots and familiar chains. The hotel itself gets surprisingly quiet at night considering you’re in the middle of everything – I mean, you’ll hear the occasional taxi hooting, but it’s not the constant urban soundtrack you get in some parts of town. The breakfast spread is pretty standard continental fare, nothing fancy, but the coffee’s decent and they had fresh fruit, which I appreciated. Staff mentioned they get a lot of business travelers, and I can see why – free Wi-Fi that actually works, a small business center, and honestly, the whole place just feels reliable. It’s not going to wow you with luxury touches, but sometimes you just want a clean, comfortable base where things work as they should.
