The bedroom’s got proper blackout curtains though, thank god, because Joburg mornings can be brutal when you’re trying to sleep off jet lag. The kitchen‘s compact but functional – I actually cooked a few meals there, and everything you need is within arm’s reach.

What I really love about this spot is how it sits right in the heart of Braamfontein’s creative revival. I mean, you’re walking distance from the Johannesburg Theatre complex, and there’s this amazing energy in the streets during the day with students from Wits University everywhere. The four-star rating feels about right – it’s not luxury, but it’s thoughtfully done with decent finishes and reliable wifi (which, let’s face it, can be hit or miss in South Africa). The building’s got that industrial-chic thing going on with exposed brick and steel beams, but the apartment feels cozy rather than cold. Parking was easier than I expected too, though I’d still recommend getting clear directions beforehand because GPS can get a bit confused with all the one-way streets in the area. Honestly, the 9.1 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s the kind of place that grows on you, especially if you’re into being in the thick of things rather than tucked away in some sterile suburb. Just be aware that weekends can get lively with the nearby bars and restaurants, but that’s part of the charm if you ask me.

  It's spacecious, and it was pretty much warm.

  Everything was perfect. From the location to the kitchen setup, down last to the bedroom comfortability, everything was perfect. The wifi was good, would very much recommend the place.

  What could be improved: The host was totally un responsive. I sent Philip a message upon booking the apartment about chnaging the booking for 1 day longer.
  He never responded. Never. I booked an extra day on Booking.com. But somehow between booking. Com and philip this didnt get confirmed. By the time i managed to get hold of Philip, 2 days before check out. He told me the apartment was now booked for that extra date. Very very disappointing. No apologies from the host. I own and run a few guest house properties for many years.
  I would be out of business if i acted like philip.
