Modern apartment in culturally vibrant Melville 22 Overview

You know what really surprised me about Modern apartment in culturally vibrant Melville 22? It actually lives up to that somewhat clunky name. I mean, when I first saw it listed, I thought “okay, another generic apartment rental trying too hard,” but honestly – this place gets Melville right.

The location on Main East Road puts you right in the thick of things, and I’m talking about the good kind of thick. You can walk to 7th Street in about five minutes, which is where all the proper restaurants and bars are. The Blind Tiger is practically around the corner, and if you’re into that whole bohemian coffee scene, Bean There Coffee Company is close enough that you’ll probably become a regular by day three. What I loved most was how the four-star setup doesn’t feel stuffy – it’s got that relaxed Melville vibe where you can actually imagine living there for more than just a weekend. The apartment itself is genuinely modern without being sterile, if that makes sense. Good WiFi (I worked from there for a few days), decent kitchen if you want to cook, and the kind of shower pressure that makes you not want to leave in the morning.

Here’s the thing about this part of Johannesburg though – it can get pretty lively, especially on weekends. I’m not talking crazy party noise, but there’s definitely a buzz from the street below. If you’re a super light sleeper, maybe pack earplugs, but honestly, I found it kind of comforting after a while. The building itself feels secure, which matters in Joburg, and parking isn’t the nightmare it is in other parts of the city. The host was actually helpful too – gave me proper recommendations, not just the touristy stuff. They pointed me toward this little Portuguese place on 4th Avenue that I never would’ve found otherwise.

Actually, what really sold me on this place was how it manages to feel both safe and authentic. You’re staying in a real neighborhood where people actually live and work, not some sanitized hotel district. The nearby Melville Koppies are perfect for morning runs if you’re into that, and there’s something really special about grabbing coffee on 7th Street and just watching the creative types do their thing. Fair warning though – this area has character, which means some buildings look a bit rough around the edges, but that’s part of the charm. The apartment rating of 8 out of 10 feels about right to me. It’s not perfect – the kitchen could use a few more utensils, and the hot water takes a minute to kick in – but it’s got personality and puts you exactly where you want to be if you’re trying to experience Johannesburg beyond the usual tourist circuit.

Discovering Johannesburg offers visitors an unforgettable journey through South Africa’s most dynamic city, from its golden history to its vibrant present and world-renowned connections to African culture and urban innovation.

Reviews of Modern apartment in culturally vibrant Melville 22

  • Exceptional – Delmarie from South Africa – September 1, 2025 (10/10)

Very neat and close to Milpark Netcare Hospital.

  • Very Good – Dodo from South Africa – August 25, 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: Check in was convenient and the stay was peaceful. Parking was not a problem at all. My only concern was the loss shedding while I was there which obviously is beyond the owner's control but owner should at least try invest in a back up system to cover the load shedding period. All in all, I enjoyed my stay. Lovely place to spend a quiet time by yourself or your partner.

  • Money worth – Sesanele from South Africa – June 30, 2025 (7/10)

Flexible check ins and multi use access code

What could be improved: Unit was cold and there wasn’t enough electricity. Towels weren’t bright white

  • Quiet, homely and well located. – Ntsiki from South Africa – May 25, 2025 (7/10)

Spacious enough for 1 person. All utensils and essential appliances available including an electric blanket in the bed (one of the controls not working though). Nice interior – feels homely. I appreciated being able to check-in earlier than the stipulated time without hassles. I generally liked the property for my specific travel needs.

What could be improved: There are a lot of stairs to get to the apartment. The neighbouring doors are close such that I could hear neighbours leave/ enter. However, the estate is quiet.

There was a misunderstanding with another booking of the property with another guest – the verification process could have been handled a lot better.

  • Excellent place to stay, value for money, location is perfect, quiet. Will definitely book again. – Hanlie from South Africa – March 13, 2025 (10/10)
