I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Modern Luxury Apartments, Sandton on Rivonia Road, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another apartment building. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t scream for attention from the street. This four-star property is tucked away on the first floor of a sleek building, and once you’re inside Unit 103, it’s a completely different world.

The thing about staying in Sandton is that you’re basically in South Africa’s financial hub – think of it as Johannesburg’s answer to Manhattan, but with jacaranda trees lining the streets. What I really appreciated about this place is how it manages to feel like a proper apartment rather than a sterile hotel room. The spaces are genuinely modern (not that fake contemporary look some places go for), with clean lines and actually comfortable furniture you’d want to sit on for more than five minutes. The kitchen is fully kitted out too, which honestly saved me a fortune since eating out in Sandton City can get pricey fast. I mean, when you’re steps away from Nelson Mandela Square and all those restaurants, it’s tempting, but having the option to grab groceries from Woolworths down the road and cook something quick was perfect.

Location-wise, you’re really well positioned here – Rivonia Road is one of those streets that connects you to everything without the chaos of the main drags. I could walk to the Gautrain station in about ten minutes (crucial if you’re flying out of OR Tambo), and the Sandton Convention Centre is practically next door if you’re in town for business. The parking situation is sorted, which anyone who’s driven around Johannesburg will tell you is half the battle. What surprised me most was how quiet it gets at night, considering you’re in the heart of everything. Sure, you’ll hear the occasional taxi hooting in the distance, but it’s nothing like the noise you’d expect. The building feels secure too – proper access control and that reassuring buzz of a place that takes safety seriously. If I had one small gripe, it’s that the check-in process can be a bit confusing since you’re dealing with apartment-style logistics rather than a traditional hotel front desk, but the staff sorts it out quickly enough. All in all, it’s one of those finds that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something the tour groups haven’t caught onto yet.

  Location and facilities.
  
  What could be improved: Broken lounge blind door and insensitive rush off for check out. It was really not necessary to rush us out of the apartment in the middle of the shower. It really wasnt, even if we were minutes past check out. Woke up late and was rushed out of the shower for check out, that was a really insensitive move and a reason why I am not coming back here EVER again.

  Lovely location, there was coffee, tea and some salt and pepper etc so that was great. Beautifully decorated. The apartment is close to the lift.
  
  What could be improved: The shutters were broken, it’s very close the road so it’s noisy. They only had one set of keys. The other shower had no pressure.

  What could be improved: A couple of things needed repairs/upgrades.
  The complex did not have water on the first day and we didn't know what to do. A warning from the host beforehand would have been appreciated as it was a known problem in the area. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay.

  Great apartment with a beautiful decoration. I loved the layout, the privacy and space! The balcony was aa cherry on top.
  
  What could be improved: One toilet was not flushing well. The lights in one bedroom and the lounge are not functioning properly. My advice is to keep tea/coffee ingredients well sealed since black ants seem to find that quickly

  The washing machine leaked seriously the first time we used it
  The shower rooms were leaking
  The bathing towels were not enough for my family, they were never brought back fully when they collected for washing?
  The cleaning sessions of the house should be improved, once is too insufficient, more so when the broom was broken, mop worn out
  The balcony was too dirty with broken clothes drying rack
  The maintenance tools are still in the house, hammers, paint buckets and brushes look untidy

  The hostess (Mahlu) was exceptional she went above and beyond in resolving our queries. She made our stay pleasant. The apartment is tastefully decorated and clean. Excellent location and very secure.
  
  What could be improved: No outdoor swimming pool onsite as advertised but this was handled efficiently and professionally, so I cannot complain.
