I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to Murphy n Dee’s Place on East Pont Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – the name alone had me curious. But you know what? This little three-star gem in Rivonia turned out to be exactly the kind of unpretentious, comfortable spot that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something locals have been keeping to themselves.

The thing about staying in Rivonia is that you’re perfectly positioned between the business hustle of Sandton and the more relaxed suburban vibe, and Murphy n Dee’s really captures that balance. I mean, you’re literally minutes from Sandton City if you need to do some serious shopping or grab dinner at one of those fancy places, but when you come back to the hotel, there’s this laid-back atmosphere that actually lets you unwind. The owners – and I’m assuming Murphy and Dee are real people, though I never did meet them – have created this space that feels more like staying at a friend’s well-appointed guesthouse than a typical hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable without trying too hard to impress, which I actually appreciated. Sometimes you just want a good bed, reliable WiFi, and a decent shower, right?

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area. When I asked about getting to Johannesburg proper for a day of exploring, they didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map – they actually sat down and talked through the best routes depending on what I wanted to see, warned me about traffic patterns (seriously, Jo’burg traffic is no joke), and even suggested a few spots that weren’t in my guidebook. The breakfast was solid too, nothing fancy but everything was fresh and they had proper South African coffee, which honestly made my mornings. Parking was never an issue, which if you’ve driven around this part of the city, you’ll know is actually a bigger deal than it sounds. The whole place runs smoothly without any of that over-the-top service that can sometimes feel a bit much when you just want to relax. I stayed there during what seemed like a busy period, but it never felt chaotic or rushed – there’s something to be said for a place that knows how to handle guests without making a big production of it.
