I found myself chatting with the front desk staff about where to grab proper boerewors (they pointed me toward a butchery just down the road that locals swear by), and they knew all the shortcuts to avoid the worst traffic when heading into Sandton or the CBD. The rooms are clean and comfortable – nothing fancy, but everything works, and I appreciated that they didn’t try to be something they’re not with over-the-top décor or amenities they couldn’t maintain properly.

What really won me over, though, was how quiet it gets at night. You’re close enough to Pine Avenue’s little cluster of shops and restaurants that you can walk to dinner, but far enough from the main drags that you won’t have taxi horns and late-night music keeping you up. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward too – no valet nonsense or hunting for street spots. I actually found myself using this place as a proper base for exploring different parts of Joburg rather than just crashing between flights. The staff seems to stick around (always a good sign), so by day three they remembered how I liked my coffee and which newspapers I preferred. It’s that kind of unpretentious hospitality that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something the tour groups haven’t discovered yet.
