I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to My Cube on Frere Street, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the name alone. But this four-star boutique spot in Randburg really surprised me in the best way possible. The building has this sleek, modern cube-like design (hence the name, obviously) that stands out against the typical Johannesburg suburban landscape, and there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the whole place.

What really got me was how thoughtfully everything’s laid out inside. The rooms have this minimalist vibe without feeling cold or sterile – you know what I mean? Clean lines, great lighting, and honestly some of the most comfortable beds I’ve encountered in Johannesburg. The staff seemed to actually care about getting the details right, which is rarer than it should be these days. I mean, they remembered my coffee preference by day two, and the housekeeping was spot-on without being intrusive. The location on Frere Street puts you right in the heart of Randburg, which is actually perfect if you want to be close to the business districts but not stuck in the chaos of the city center. You’re walking distance from some solid local restaurants – there’s this Ethiopian place around the corner that the front desk recommended, and they were absolutely right about it.

Here’s the thing that impressed me most: the attention to practical stuff that other places overlook. Plenty of power outlets where you actually need them, proper blackout curtains that work, and – this might sound small but it matters – really good water pressure in the showers. Parking was straightforward and secure, which if you’ve driven around Johannesburg, you’ll appreciate. The whole place has this quiet, focused energy that made it easy to actually get work done during the day and properly relax at night. It’s not trying to be flashy or impress you with unnecessary bells and whistles, but everything they do have works exactly as it should. I stayed there during a particularly busy week in the city, and while other areas were hectic, My Cube felt like this calm pocket where you could reset. That’s worth a lot, honestly.

Travelers should plan their Johannesburg visit at least two months ahead for major events like Heritage Day and Freedom Day celebrations, ensuring the best experiences and prime access to popular districts and attractions.

  My husband and I had an amazing stay at My Cube. Our hosts were absolutely wonderful and very friendly. The place was so specious and tastefully decorated. It is evident that a lot of thought and consideration went into the accommodation. Everything you need for a weekend getaway is catered for. Big Bonus is that it is safe yet convientely located.
