Walking up to My Cube on Frere Street, you immediately get the sense that someone put real thought into this place. It’s one of those four-star properties that doesn’t try too hard to impress — the design is clean and modern without being sterile, and honestly, that’s refreshing in Johannesburg where some hotels can feel a bit over the top. The staff greeted me like I was an old friend, which set the tone for everything that followed.

Location & Getting Around

Randburg is actually a smart choice if you want to be close to the action without dealing with the chaos of central Joburg. You’re perfectly positioned between Sandton’s business district and the trendy spots in Melville — I mean, you can reach either in about 15 minutes depending on traffic. What really sold me though was the free parking right on site. Anyone who’s tried to find secure parking in this city knows that’s worth its weight in gold, especially for couples exploring the area (and trust me, this place seems to attract a lot of romantic getaways).

The Room Experience

My room had this interesting cube-like design that actually makes sense once you’re inside — everything feels purposeful and uncluttered. The bed was ridiculously comfortable, and I loved how they’d thought about the little things like proper reading lights and enough outlets for all your devices. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, with a shower that had excellent water pressure. You know what impressed me most? The soundproofing — even though you’re on a busy street, the rooms stay surprisingly quiet.

Dining & Amenities

While there isn’t a full restaurant on site, they’ve partnered with some excellent local spots that deliver, and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable about nearby dining options. I actually preferred this approach — it meant I got to try some authentic Joburg favorites rather than generic hotel food. The common areas are thoughtfully designed too, with spaces where you can actually relax and maybe meet other travelers. There’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the whole setup.

Why Guests Love It

After spending a few nights here, I totally understand why couples rate this place so highly — there’s an intimate, boutique feel that makes it perfect for romantic trips. The combination of excellent location, genuine hospitality, and those thoughtful design touches creates something special. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Johannesburg, but it absolutely nails what modern travelers actually want: a comfortable, well-located base with personality and staff who care. Plus, that perfect 10 rating from recent guests isn’t just marketing fluff — you can feel the attention to detail in everything from the check-in process to the way they handle special requests.

Travelers should plan their Johannesburg visit at least two months ahead for major events like Heritage Day and Freedom Day celebrations, ensuring the best experiences and prime access to popular districts and attractions.

  My husband and I had an amazing stay at My Cube. Our hosts were absolutely wonderful and very friendly. The place was so specious and tastefully decorated. It is evident that a lot of thought and consideration went into the accommodation. Everything you need for a weekend getaway is catered for. Big Bonus is that it is safe yet convientely located.
