Nova Skye Overview

You know what really caught me off guard about Nova Skye? I was expecting just another business hotel in Randburg, but this place actually has some serious character. It’s tucked away on Botha Avenue – which, honestly, if you don’t know the area well, you might drive past it at first – but that’s sort of part of its charm. The whole street has this quiet, residential feel that’s worlds away from the chaos you get closer to Sandton City.

Walking into the lobby, I mean, the design team clearly knew what they were doing. There’s this contemporary South African aesthetic going on that doesn’t feel forced or touristy – think clean lines mixed with some really gorgeous local artwork and these amazing light fixtures that cast these interesting shadows in the evenings. The staff actually remembers your name after the first day, which sounds small but makes a huge difference when you’re staying somewhere for work or just trying to feel settled. And honestly, with a four-star rating, you’d expect decent service, but these folks go a bit beyond that. The concierge – I think his name was Thabo – gave me directions to this incredible Ethiopian place nearby that I never would have found on my own.

The rooms are where Nova Skye really shines though. Mine overlooked this lovely tree-lined section of the neighborhood, so mornings were pretty peaceful – no traffic noise, just birds and the occasional dog walker. The beds are properly comfortable (not those rock-hard mattresses some places think are “firm support”), and there’s actually enough space to spread out your stuff without feeling cramped. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical details – decent WiFi that doesn’t cut out during video calls, enough power outlets near the desk, and a coffee station that doesn’t make you feel like you’re roughing it. The bathroom had one of those rainfall showerheads that actually works, plus really good water pressure, which, let’s be honest, can be hit or miss in Johannesburg depending on where you stay.

Parking is straightforward and secure – you don’t have to worry about your car, which is always a relief in any major South African city. The breakfast spread is solid without being overwhelming, and they do this fantastic fresh fruit selection that changes based on what’s in season. I ended up eating there most mornings just because it felt relaxed and the coffee was legitimately good. The whole place has this 9.9 rating from guests, and after spending a week there, I can see why – it’s not trying to be flashy or over-the-top, just really well thought out and genuinely comfortable. If you’re looking for something in the Randburg area that feels more like a boutique experience than a corporate hotel, this is definitely worth considering.

  The accommodation is spacious and super clean. It has all the amenities you can wish for with little extras added by the host. The host is friendly and responsive. There is safe parking for an ordinary sedan vehicle. It is near the Johannesburg Eye Hospital, within 5 to 10 minutes away, depending on the traffic. If you have to be in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg this is a great affordable place to stay.
  
  What could be improved: Although we did not have any problems, people with mobility challenges may find it difficult to reach the flat as it has a flight of stairs. There is also two stairs between the passage and the main bedroom. The flat is great for solo travellers, couples and families. The second room with two single beds also serves as access to the bathroom. Again it was not a problem for us.

  This is a litte gem–Tranquil and well thought out with wonderful and practical details. My wife and I loved the styling, as well as the view. The practical details included for self catering were really appreciated. We would most certainly stay here again!
