I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Nu Oasis guest house on Byron Road, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard residential street in Lombardy East. But you know what? Sometimes those unassuming places end up being exactly what you need, and this little three-star spot definitely falls into that category.

The thing about staying in this part of Johannesburg is that you’re actually in a really practical location without all the tourist trap nonsense. Lombardy East has this lived-in feel – it’s where people actually go about their daily business, which I kind of love. The guest house itself sits in what’s clearly a converted residential property, and they’ve done a decent job making it work as accommodation. The rooms are clean and straightforward (no fancy frills, but honestly, who needs them?), and the staff genuinely seems to care about making sure you’re sorted. I mean, the owner actually remembered my name after the first day, which doesn’t happen at your typical chain hotel.

What really struck me was how quiet it gets in the evenings – you’re close enough to the main roads that getting around isn’t a hassle, but far enough into the residential streets that you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise. The breakfast situation is pretty solid too, though don’t expect some elaborate buffet spread. It’s more like what a thoughtful host would make for guests, which actually feels more genuine than those overwhelming hotel breakfast scenes where half the food sits under heat lamps all morning. Parking was never an issue either, which if you’ve spent any time driving around Joburg, you’ll know is not something to take for granted. The whole setup just feels… well, like staying with people who actually want you there, rather than just processing another booking. For what you’re paying, especially compared to some of the overpriced places closer to the city center, it’s honestly hard to complain about much of anything here.

  It’s very clean and quite. Very comfortable. They have solar power as backup if they have outages which is nice. The down side is they have no hot water when they are on back up power.
  
  What could be improved: They have this kettle that we couldn’t use because they didn’t provide a plug that can be used with it. No heating system like air con or a heater which you might want if it’s gonna be very cold.

  The bedroom are stunning. The bathrooms are beautiful and the area is very quiet. I love the lamp stands on the side of the bed so you don't have to have the bedroom light on
  
  What could be improved: The wifi was on and off. The check out times are different, on the website it say midnight but when you get there and look at the house rules it says 10 am. So we had to rush to leave because we didn't look at the house rules
