The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in quality – not in a worn-out way, but more like someone’s stylish aunt decorated the place with actual thought. The beds are properly comfortable, which honestly can be hit or miss even at nice places, and the bathrooms have good water pressure and those little touches that make you feel like they’re paying attention.

The location is what really makes this place work, though. Melrose Boulevard itself is one of those Johannesburg streets that locals actually enjoy walking down – there’s decent foot traffic during the day, interesting shops and cafes within easy walking distance, and it doesn’t feel isolated or sketchy at night like some parts of the city can. I mean, you’re still in Joburg so you use common sense, but the area has a good energy to it. Parking was surprisingly straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around the city will appreciate. The hotel sits in this sweet spot where you can easily get to the main business districts or cultural areas without feeling like you’re stuck in either corporate sterile-land or tourist trap central. I noticed they get a good mix of business travelers and people just exploring the city, which usually indicates a place that’s doing something right. Would I stay here again? Definitely – it’s one of those places that just works without trying too hard to impress you.

  Good facilities and furniture available, close to places of interest.
  
  What could be improved: Prepaid electricity meter was not sufficiently charged when we came, but the host/property practitioner kept shifting the blame to us. We had to cut off all electricity but the bare minimum for 3 out of 5 days just to make sure there's enough to heat water the next day, and all this at a time when Joburg was facing a cold front. Did not want any drama, as milk was already spoilt (literally and figuratively) and we just wanted to get through our business trip successfully. Future tenants, please just make sure there's enough on the meter when you check in.
