The name actually makes perfect sense once you’re there – there’s this lovely citrus-scented garden that immediately puts you at ease as you walk up to the entrance. I mean, after dealing with the usual chaos of Johannesburg traffic, finding this peaceful spot tucked away on Hillel Avenue in Northcliff felt like discovering a secret.

The thing about this four-star place is that it doesn’t try too hard to impress you with flashy lobbies or over-the-top decor. Instead, it’s got this understated elegance that honestly feels more authentic than a lot of the bigger hotels I’ve stayed at. The owners clearly put thought into the details – I’m talking about proper coffee (not that instant stuff), decent water pressure in the showers, and beds that don’t leave you with a crick in your neck. The rooms have this warm, homey feel with just enough local touches to remind you where you are without being kitschy about it. What I really appreciated was the quietness, especially at night. Northcliff sits up on the ridge, so you’re away from the main road noise but still close enough to get into the city center or up to Sandton without too much hassle.

Here’s something most people don’t realize about staying in this area – you’re actually in one of Joburg’s more established neighborhoods, where locals go for weekend brunches and evening walks. There’s this great little coffee shop just down the road that the guest house staff told me about (they seem to genuinely know the area, not just the tourist spots), and I ended up going there every morning. The parking situation is straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in Johannesburg will tell you is no small thing. I stayed during winter, and while the days were crisp and sunny, the evenings got properly cold – but the heating worked well, and there were extra blankets that actually looked and felt clean. Look, it’s not the fanciest place you’ll ever stay, and if you’re expecting a full resort experience with multiple restaurants and a spa, this isn’t that. But if you want somewhere that feels safe, comfortable, and genuinely welcoming – somewhere that doesn’t make you feel like just another booking number – then this place delivers. The 9.2 rating it’s got makes sense to me; it’s the kind of spot where small things are done right, and you leave feeling like you’ve had a proper taste of what makes this city special.

  Northcliff is a lovely safe area.We went to Olivia’s Bakery just down the road for the most amazing breakfasts. Our room no 3 is a corner top level room with stunning views of Joburg. The bed and duvet were extremely comfy and top quality. The shower was powerful and both bath and shower had plenty hot water, the heating was great. The location was perfect for us visiting family , lots of restaurants and Churches nearby and Cresta shopping centre a short drive away too.
