I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Owls Loft Guesthouse on Murray Street, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name had me picturing something a bit quirky, maybe even rustic, but this four-star place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked into this quiet residential stretch that feels worlds away from the hustle of central Johannesburg, yet you’re still close enough to everything that matters.

The whole vibe here is what I’d call “sophisticated comfort” – you know, the kind of place where you can kick off your shoes but still feel like you’re somewhere special. The owners clearly put thought into every corner, and it shows in those little touches that make you feel at home rather than just another guest checking boxes on a travel itinerary. The rooms have this warm, lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake, with proper reading lights (thank goodness) and windows that actually open to let in some fresh air. I mean, the beds are seriously comfortable too – I’m talking about the kind where you wake up actually rested instead of feeling like you wrestled with the pillows all night.

What really won me over, though, was how genuinely helpful everyone was without being overbearing. They know the neighborhood inside and out, which comes in handy when you’re trying to figure out the best spots for dinner or need directions that don’t involve getting lost in Joburg’s somewhat confusing street layout. The breakfast situation is solid – nothing fancy, but fresh and filling, with decent coffee that doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around since yesterday. Parking is straightforward, which honestly feels like a small miracle in this city, and the whole place stays pretty quiet even when it’s full. I stayed during what seemed like a busy period and barely heard other guests, which says something about both the clientele and the way the place is designed. It’s not the flashiest spot you’ll find, and maybe the WiFi could be a touch faster, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the whole experience that makes you want to come back next time you’re in town.

  We did not make use of the breakfast, as we were time restrained. But Maureen did offer to do it earlier, and we appreciate her kindness. The location is excellent, because it is in a safe and peaceful area, with lots of trees and beautiful garden and surroundings.
  The extra caring gestures the staff showed us, by switching on the lights in the room, as well as switching on the heated blanket while we went out to buy some food, were very much appreciated. Thank you to Maureen and staff. You are stars!
  
  What could be improved: We appreciated a fridge and the use of the small kitchen, but for the twin room it would be better to have a private coffee station and small fridge in the room itself. Sharing with other guests, especially in winter times are not an option for us, due to the winter germs and viruses that goes around. By Grace there were no other guests that shared this kitchen during our stay.

  Nice neighborhood, very secure, not far from shopping centers, big yard with with a nice land scape and big enough and clean swimming pool
  
  What could be improved: The bathroom bath and shower needs to be upgraded, didn't like them at all, except for the other room was really nice and would have preferred it if we didn't have our child with us.
