You know what strikes you first about Palazzo Hotel? It’s this sort of unexpected elegance tucked into the Montecasino complex that honestly feels like you’ve stumbled into a slice of Venice right in Johannesburg. I mean, Fourways isn’t exactly where you’d expect to find a five-star property that actually lives up to its rating, but here we are.

The whole setup works because it’s basically attached to Montecasino – which, if you haven’t been, is this elaborate Italian-themed entertainment complex that could easily feel kitschy but somehow doesn’t. The hotel benefits from all that atmosphere without the chaos, if that makes sense. You’ll hear the gentle sounds of the piazza below during the day, but honestly, the rooms are well-insulated enough that it’s not an issue at night. The staff really knows their stuff too – I’ve stayed here probably four times now, and they remember little things like your coffee preference or that you need extra pillows.

What I actually love most is how they’ve managed to create this sense of being somewhere special without making you feel like you’re in a theme park. The rooms have these gorgeous marble bathrooms that feel authentically luxurious, and the beds – well, you know how hotel beds can be hit or miss – these are definitely hits. The courtyard views are worth requesting, especially in the evening when everything’s lit up. Parking‘s a breeze since you’re right in the Montecasino complex, which is huge if you’re driving from OR Tambo or anywhere in the northern suburbs.

I’ll be honest though, it can get busy during school holidays when families flock to the casino and theater shows, so the elevators sometimes feel like rush hour at Sandton City. But that’s really my only complaint. The location works brilliantly if you’re doing business in Sandton or Midrand – you’re maybe fifteen minutes from either, depending on traffic. And if you’re here for leisure, you’ve got the Bird Gardens right next door, decent restaurants downstairs, and you can catch a show without stepping outside. It’s one of those places where you could genuinely spend a long weekend without needing to venture out, but you’re also perfectly positioned to explore if that’s more your style.

  The welcoming as you check in to the hotel all the staff members are friendly and very quick check in process and the parking valet service is amazing keep it up guys.

  Great space. Staff were exceptional and attentive.
  
  What could be improved: The only thing that was a slight issue, was that I had ordered, booked and reconfirmed with Reservations for a smoking room / room with balcony/patio to smoke, but when we were booked in, we only found out – after unpacking our bags and call Reception – that our room was not a smoking room. And we had to move to another room.

  Safe overnight in Johannesburg. Beautiful building and gardens. Loved our room with patio doors and outside seating. Very convenient to take the private walkway to Monte Casino which is a bit like the Venice Hotel in Las Vegas where there are lots of options for a meal. The Fire Pit was exceptional in Monte Casino
