Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Parkhurst Luxe Retreat on 9th Street – I mean, the name sounds a bit fancy for Johannesburg, right? But walking through those doors completely changed my perspective on what a four-star property can actually deliver. This place gets it right in ways that surprised me.

The location is actually brilliant if you know the area. You’re tucked away in Randburg, which means you avoid the chaos of the city center but you’re still close enough to everything that matters. What I really loved is how they’ve managed to create this quiet bubble – you know how some hotels claim to be peaceful but you can still hear traffic all night? Not here. The rooms face away from the street, and there’s this lovely courtyard area that just absorbs sound naturally. I slept better than I had in weeks, which honestly wasn’t what I expected from a Joburg hotel.

The staff here actually know what they’re doing, and I don’t mean that in a backhanded way – it’s just refreshing when people genuinely want to help rather than just going through the motions. The woman at reception (I think her name was Nomsa) gave me these incredibly specific directions to a local restaurant that I never would have found otherwise, complete with landmarks and shortcuts. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t fake. The rooms themselves are spacious without being overwhelming – they’ve got this modern but warm aesthetic that doesn’t feel sterile. The bathroom was particularly impressive, with water pressure that could probably wake the neighbors if you wanted it to. Small thing, but when you’re traveling for business and need that morning shower to actually wake you up, it matters more than you’d think. Parking was easy too, which in this part of town is honestly half the battle. I’ve stayed at places where finding a spot becomes this whole ordeal, but here it’s just sorted – covered parking, security, no stress about leaving your car overnight.

  Perfect location for our family.
  Spacious, comfortable and good security.
  Melody welcomed us warmly on arrival.
  
  What could be improved: Unable to turn off cupboard and under plinth lights in the kitchen so they remain on constantly.
  Also the heated towel rail in 2nd en suite bathroom upstairs has no 'off' switch. It's very hot and unsafe for children to touch.
  Shower head in downstairs bathroom is basic and towel rail needs attention.
