I mean, with a 9.5 rating, I had high expectations, but walking up to 5 Shrewsbury Street, I wasn’t prepared for how elegant yet homey this place would feel.

The location is brilliant if you know Johannesburg at all. Bryanston is one of those leafy northern suburbs where you can actually walk around without constantly looking over your shoulder, and Shrewsbury Street is quiet enough that you won’t hear traffic all night but busy enough that there’s always something happening nearby. I loved that I could stroll to the Bryanston Organic Market on Thursday mornings – something you’d only figure out if you stayed here a few days. The staff actually told me about it during check-in, which was refreshingly personal rather than the usual corporate spiel about “world-class this” and “luxury that.”

What really sets this cottage apart is the attention to detail that feels genuinely thoughtful rather than showy. The rooms have this perfect balance of modern comfort and that warm South African hospitality you hear about but don’t always experience. I’m talking about things like locally-sourced toiletries that actually smell amazing, not like generic hotel soap, and bedding that’s clearly been chosen by someone who cares about a good night’s sleep. The breakfast – well, let’s just say I understood why other guests were lingering over their coffee until nearly 10 AM. There’s also something to be said for a place where the WiFi works flawlessly (crucial when you’re trying to upload photos to make your friends jealous) and where parking isn’t a daily negotiation with cramped spaces or sketchy security. Small things, maybe, but they add up when you’re actually living somewhere for more than just a night or two. If you’re planning to explore Jozi from a base that feels more like staying with a well-connected local friend than checking into another anonymous hotel, this cottage gets it right in ways that surprised me.

  I really enjoyed my stay at The Nook in Bryanston. The place is super clean, cozy and has everything you need. It’s in a quiet area but still close to shops and restaurants, which was really convenient. The host was friendly and made me feel right at home. I’d definitely stay here again!
