You know what struck me first about Pine Park Garden Cottages? It’s tucked away on Keith Avenue in this quiet residential pocket of Randburg, and honestly, if you didn’t know it was there, you’d probably drive right past it. That’s actually part of its charm though – it feels more like you’re staying at someone’s beautifully kept family property rather than a typical hotel.

The whole setup is refreshingly different from your standard four-star accommodation. Instead of cramped hotel rooms, you get these spacious cottages scattered around genuinely lush gardens (and I mean properly lush, not the sad corporate landscaping you usually see). Each cottage has its own little personality – some have these lovely covered verandas where you can actually sit with your morning coffee and listen to the birds, which is pretty remarkable considering you’re still technically in Johannesburg. The gardens are what really sell the place though; there are established trees everywhere, and the owners clearly know what they’re doing with plants. I watched hadeda ibises strutting around the lawn like they owned the place, which they basically do.

What I appreciated most was how quiet it gets at night – you’re close enough to everything in Randburg that you can easily get to the malls or restaurants, but far enough from the main roads that you’re not dealing with traffic noise. Parking is never an issue, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Joburg will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The staff genuinely seem to care about the place rather than just going through the motions, and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. I mean, the 9.3 rating makes sense when you experience how they’ve thought through the little things – proper shower pressure, reliable WiFi, and cottages that are actually clean (not just hotel-clean, but proper clean). The only minor thing is that if you’re looking for that buzzy hotel bar scene or room service at all hours, this isn’t your spot. But honestly, that’s exactly why it works so well – it’s for people who want a proper base to explore from, or who just need somewhere peaceful to decompress after dealing with the intensity of Joburg.

  Jennifer and Duncan, the hosts gave us a heart-warming welcome we quickly felt so much at home. The place was very lovely, cosy and accessing the pool also spiced up everything about our stay. We are definitely coming back.
