You know what caught me off guard about Q on First B&B? Walking up to this place on 1st Avenue East, I was expecting just another standard guesthouse in Randburg, but honestly – this four-star spot has way more personality than that. The building itself sits in this quiet residential pocket that feels refreshingly removed from the usual Johannesburg hustle, though you’re still close enough to everything that matters.

The owners clearly put thought into the details here. I mean, the rooms have this warm, lived-in feel that’s miles away from cookie-cutter hotel bland, and the breakfast situation is actually impressive – they do this proper spread with local touches that feels genuine rather than trying-too-hard touristy. What really won me over was how they handle the small stuff that most places overlook. The WiFi actually works everywhere (not just in the lobby like some places), there’s decent parking right on the property, and the sound insulation is surprisingly good considering you’re in a residential area where people actually live their lives.

The location thing is interesting – Randburg isn’t exactly the flashy part of town that first-time visitors usually land in, but that’s sort of the point. You get this authentic slice of how the city actually works without feeling like you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere. The nearby streets have proper local spots for coffee and groceries, and you can easily get into central Joburg or up to Sandton when you need to. I stayed here during what turned out to be a pretty busy period, and the staff never seemed frazzled or rushed – they actually knew the area well enough to give useful recommendations rather than just pointing you toward the obvious tourist stuff. It’s the kind of place where you end up chatting with other guests over breakfast because the atmosphere encourages it, but you can also keep to yourself if that’s more your speed.

Best attractions in Johannesburg range from the historic Gold Reef City theme park to the trendy Maboneng Precinct and elegant venues overlooking the sprawling cityscape and Constitution Hill.

  Is is an absolutely exceptional place and space to rest, relax and recharge. Highly recommended whether you stay or visit Johannesburg. Staff from reception, to Manager, cleaning are extremely friendly, hospitable and helpful. They check on you regularly to make sure you are still happy and comfortable.

  When we arrived around 4pm the property felt deserted. Eventually I found a staff member who helped us with the check in and showed us the common room areas and our room. Like the rest of the house, our room with ensuite bathroom was big with a big, comfortable bed and it was nicely decorated.
  We sat in the bar living room area for a while, enjoyed a drink using the honesty box, but no-one else seemed to be around. This is a new ce property, it just has the feel of past glory.
  
  What could be improved: The shower was leaking water on to the floor. There is nothing around the property but the Rosebank shopping mall, about 1.4km away. We were advised not to walk there but use an Uber.
