So I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Radisson RED Hotel Johannesburg Rosebank, I wasn’t expecting much from another chain hotel. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. The lobby has this cool industrial-meets-modern vibe that feels more like a trendy Johannesburg startup office than your typical hotel space, and you know what? It works.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to be in the thick of things without dealing with the chaos of the CBD. Rosebank is one of those neighborhoods that locals love but tourists sometimes overlook – you’re literally walking distance from Zone @ Rosebank shopping center (great for grabbing essentials or just wandering around), and the Gautrain station is right there when you need to get to OR Tambo or Sandton quickly. I mean, Parks Boulevard can get a bit busy during rush hour, but the hotel’s set back enough that you don’t really hear the traffic once you’re inside.

What really got me was how this four-star place manages to feel both polished and relaxed at the same time. The rooms have these floor-to-ceiling windows that give you proper views of the Johannesburg skyline – and trust me, the city looks pretty spectacular from up there, especially at sunset when all those glass towers catch the light. The beds are seriously comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and they’ve got USB ports built right into the bedside tables, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re trying to charge three devices at once. The bathrooms are sleek with rain showers that actually have good pressure – you’d be surprised how often hotels mess that up.

The staff really knows their stuff too. When I mentioned I was looking for good local restaurants beyond the usual tourist spots, the concierge didn’t just hand me a generic list – she actually drew me a little map to this amazing Ethiopian place in Melville and told me which taxi companies to trust. That kind of local insight is gold when you’re trying to experience the real Joburg. And honestly, for a hotel with an 8.1 rating, the service exceeded what I expected – they’re attentive without being hovering, if that makes sense.

The only minor thing I’d mention is that the gym gets pretty crowded around 6 PM (apparently lots of business travelers have the same workout schedule), but if you go earlier or later it’s actually well-equipped. Oh, and parking is secure and included, which in Johannesburg is definitely not something to take for granted – you’ll sleep better knowing your car is safe in their underground garage rather than street-side somewhere.

Look, Rosebank isn’t Camps Bay or the V&A Waterfront, but if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere that actual Joburg residents would choose – somewhere with character that doesn’t try too hard – this RED hotel really delivers. Plus you’re perfectly positioned to explore the city’s art galleries, hit up the Sunday markets at Neighbourgoods, or just soak in the energy of one of Africa’s most dynamic cities.
