I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Raphael Suites, I wasn’t expecting much from another five-star hotel in Sandton. But this place actually surprised me, and I mean that in the best way possible. Sitting right on Nelson Mandela Square, you’re literally steps away from all the action, but somehow the suites feel like this peaceful retreat above it all. The location is pretty brilliant actually – you can grab coffee at Vida e Caffè downstairs, do some serious shopping at Sandton City, or just people-watch from the square without dealing with the usual Johannesburg traffic headaches.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to make each suite feel like you’re staying in someone’s really well-appointed apartment rather than a hotel room. The kitchenettes aren’t just for show either – I actually cooked breakfast a couple times using the Woolworths downstairs (pro tip: their ready-made meals are surprisingly good). The beds are those cloud-like affairs that make you want to hit snooze three times, and honestly, the bathrooms have better water pressure than my place back home. You know what I appreciated? The little touches that show someone was actually thinking – proper blackout curtains for those early Johannesburg sunrises, decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out during video calls, and enough power outlets that you’re not playing musical chairs with your devices.

The service hits that sweet spot where they’re attentive without being hovering – the front desk folks actually remember your name after day two, which is rarer than you’d think. Parking is sorted in the building (thank goodness, because street parking in Sandton can be a nightmare), and the security is tight without feeling oppressive. I stayed during a busy conference season and while the lobby got a bit hectic during check-in rushes, the suites themselves stayed quiet. The only minor gripe I had was that housekeeping sometimes came a bit early, but that’s hardly a dealbreaker. Look, with an 8.3 rating, you know people are generally happy here, and I get why – it’s one of those places that just works without trying too hard to impress you with flashy stuff you don’t need.

  Breakfast was a 10 walk from the hotel inside the Michelangelo…it is worth the walk as the restaruant is the Roar right across from the convention centre.
  Staff are friendly and very helpful. Free parking too. You just pull up outside and the staff take you card an retrieve it on 10 minutes notice

  Facilities were excellent. The gentleman at reception and the gents at the entrance went above and beyond to ensure that we had a wonderful stay.

  What could be improved: Finding the breakfast place was a nightmare,took us time to eventually get there after a lot of back and forth and up and downs (a whole 30 min).Funny that the mall security had no clue where the restaurant was
