Robertsham (Halaal) Self Catering Cottages Overview

First Impressions

When I first pulled up to Robertsham (Halaal) Self Catering Cottages, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from the name alone. But you know what? This four-star property on Rifle Range Road completely surprised me in the best way possible. The cottages have this welcoming, residential feel that immediately puts you at ease — it’s like staying at a well-appointed friend’s place rather than a typical hotel. The fact that they offer halaal-certified accommodations is a thoughtful touch that clearly resonates with many guests, and the 8.8 rating speaks volumes about their attention to detail.

Location & Getting Around

The location in Johannesburg is actually pretty brilliant, especially if you’re looking for somewhere that feels safe and accessible without being right in the thick of the city chaos. Recent guests have been raving about it — I mean, a 9.4 location score doesn’t happen by accident. What I really appreciated was the free private parking right on site, which honestly takes a huge weight off your shoulders when you’re navigating an unfamiliar city. Couples seem to particularly love this spot for romantic getaways, and I can see why — there’s something intimate about having your own cottage space.

The Cottage Experience

Each cottage comes with its own kitchen, which is where this place really shines. I’m talking about proper cooking facilities, not just a mini-fridge and microwave setup. You can actually prepare real meals here, which is perfect if you’re staying longer or just want the flexibility to eat in sometimes. The room layouts are thoughtfully designed too — there’s enough space to spread out and actually live comfortably, not just sleep and shower. The self-catering aspect means you’re not tied to hotel meal times or limited dining options, which gives you so much more freedom to explore the city at your own pace.

Practical Comforts

What struck me most was how well-maintained everything feels. The cottages have that lived-in comfort without any of the wear and tear you sometimes get with self-catering places. The halaal certification is clearly taken seriously here — it’s not just a marketing point but something they’ve integrated thoughtfully into the entire operation. The staff understands what this means to guests and handles it with genuine care. Plus, having your own space means you can maintain your routines and dietary requirements without any hassle or awkward conversations.

Why Guests Love It

This place works because it gives you the best of both worlds — the services and standards of a quality hotel with the independence and space of your own temporary home. The combination of excellent location ratings, private parking, and self-catering facilities creates this perfect storm of convenience that’s hard to find elsewhere in Johannesburg. Honestly, once you’ve experienced having your own cottage with proper cooking facilities in such a well-rated location, it’s tough to go back to cramped hotel rooms with overpriced room service. The fact that couples consistently rate it so highly tells you everything you need to know about the romantic potential of having your own private retreat in the city.

  • Pleasant needs improvement but we would stay there again. – Anonymous from South Africa – July 8, 2025 (6/10)

Good location. Good security. Friendly welcoming host. Late check out.

What could be improved: Blankets were to thin for the cold but a heater was provided. Beds were very hard. Towels need to be bigger. Plates & cutlery weren't washed properly. Weird tasting coffee.

The location was very easy to find. The apartment was central to to mall, more than enough halaal restaurants, literally 3 masjids within 1km radius. The host was really hospitable and most important ethical as there were a few challenges which he resolved immediately. The initial apartment had an issue with the geyser (no hot water) upon informing I was upgraded to another apartment that was bigger and better. The owner had also informed me that he was flexible with Checking out which was a bonus.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Home away from home. – Fatima from South Africa – June 23, 2024 (8/10)

The owner as well as the caretaker were friendly and helpful. The accommodation was home away from home and it had everything we needed during our stay. The place was nice and warm from all the sun it gets so we didn't feel the cold JHB mornings. We also felt safe..

What could be improved: The ants. But understood that it's quite a problem in JHB area. They did provide us with ant killer which we used.

  • Well we did enjoy the comfort of the first cottage, the first cottage did meet our expectations. – Farouk from South Africa – June 7, 2024 (7/10)

Not applicable as it was self catering

What could be improved: The second cottage , bathroom could do a little upgrade

  • Excellent stay! Highly recommended. – Lydia from Malta – April 5, 2024 (9/10)

Great management team, super friendly, always available to answer any questions. The flat was neat and had everything that we needed.

What could be improved: The lock for the outside gate was a bit tricky to learn how to lock it correctly.

Nice location within distance to where we needed to go
